annathepiper: (Hard Day)
Guh, I'm tellin' ya, hardcore rain, flood, and wind warnings are just the thing I wanted to see in the greater Seattle metro area on the day when I need to set out for my very first day of radiation treatment. I've been working from home all day so far, so I have at least missed the joy of this morning's commute. Not so fortunate was [livejournal.com profile] spazzkat, who relayed to [livejournal.com profile] solarbird and me that it took him about an hour and 15 minutes to get from Kenmore to downtown Seattle. Lake Forest Park Town Center was a mess, with the little creek in front of the shopping center overflowing its banks.

I've been following the coverage the Times has been posting all day, and note with some trepidation that the underpass under 405 that's right on my usual route over to Evergreen has been closed due to flooding. Which means I'll need to take a slightly longer route to get there. Hopefully there won't be any wacky fun surprises on Bothell Way up to 405, or on 405 back down into Kirkland.

Also, I think I'll be leaving super-early just to take it nice and slow and easy to get there. I'll either show up ridiculously early, in which case I'll hang around and read something, or else I'll get there close to the proper time after a very cautious drive. Wish me luck, folks.

Made it to and from radiation treatment safely, and with plenty of time to spare even accounting for a) the underpass on the route I usually take being flooded and b) the exits onto 405 in Bothell being closed so I couldn't go that way either. Wound up taking part of the usual route but shooting past the street that leads to the underpass, then circling my way back around on surrounding streets. Took me a little over half an hour all told, for a drive that should usually take only 15 minutes.

And it could have been worse; by the time I left the house, the rain was settling down. There were some hydroplany bits on 522 but nothing serious, and mostly, all the other drivers were being more or less careful. Traffic was very dense on the way back, but agian, no serious issues.

The treatment itself was quick and almost entirely painless. They stuck me under the machine and shot a couple of invisible beams at me, the only evidence of which for me were two tones that sounded about an octave apart and a slight stinging sensation here and there in the affected area. As I was advised by [livejournal.com profile] rachelcaine, I did indeed get drawn on. And also taped on, to delineate the target area. Ashley, my radiation tech chick, needed to take pics of that for later reference. Apparently I'm to be given a brief chat about that later this week. My right arm felt a little weak as I headed out to the car, but otherwise I've felt fine ever since and I plan to be working online for a bit longer tonight. Tomorrow I start with the getting up super-early to account for leaving work early enough to make it to 5:30-ish treatment appointments--though tomorrow gets extra bonus points for schedule weirdness, as I also have a thyroid followup. I am Medical Girl.

Also, in honor of Deluge 2007 (a.k.a. 'An Inconvenient Soup', as it was getting referred to on a local talk radio station this afternoon), I now have a wet, distressed Strongbow icon. Because yeah, that's about the feeling of the entire Pacific Northwest region right now.
