Some stuff that isn't writing!

Just to prove that there are still things that don't involve writing in my current existence...

I did actually write about 460 words last night in between running an errand, going bowling, watching the one Angel episode, watching a lot of the stuff on the GBS DVD again, and staying up until 5:30am just chatting with mamishka (which was very satisfying)... but as it turns out I'm going to have to rework Chapter 1 of this thing some.

Meems, who continues her excellent talent of being able to take something I've already thought of and suggest ways to rearrange it to make it infinitely more plausible, gave me a new way of approaching this chapter that I reluctantly decided I need to go ahead and take, even though it's still the first draft. I want to uphold the lesson I have learned of not worrying so much about making things perfect in the first draft and just telling the damn story--but on the other hand, what Meems suggested really did, upon reflection, make a lot more sense.

And she kindly congratulated me for being willing to listen to her suggestions; as she pointed out, it is a valuable skill that a writer must learn, being able to take a step back from something you've already written and acknowledge when you haven't necessarily approached it the best way. Because gods know I'm going to need to be able to do this with editors, if I get to the point where I have actually sold manuscripts and will have to tweak on 'em before they actually see the published light of day!

So big thanks to Meems on that!

Noting the word count from yesterday, even if I am going to devote a big chunk of today to rearranging Chapter 1 so that it makes more sense based on Meems' suggestion:

Tonight's writing report

Tonight I actually lost words, as a result of having to revise Chapter 1. But I've done most of the revisions I want on it--and although I've had a net loss of words in the chapter I think it'll actually make more sense when it's done. Moreover, it gets the action started a little faster, because I get to lose some unnecessary exposition, and I can get in more of the stuff I want to cram into this chapter. It's still going to be longer than any of the chapters I've got in Faerie Blood.

Written tonight: Hard to really count since while I stuck in a lot of new words, much of what I did was revising words I've already got and deleting words I didn't need. I'm down by 990 words, though.
