After a bit of a shaky start to this new season of Doctor Who, it was a bit of a relief to have an episode that I actively enjoyed pretty much all the way through. It was certainly silly, but really, I was okay with that. And now I’m actually starting to like Capaldi’s Doctor as well. Don’t get me wrong–I’ve already found him compelling. But in this episode, I actually liked him too.
Spoilers are in the magic box!

Date: 2014-09-11 06:54 am (UTC)It was longer ago, but if you're going to do a historical pastiche with added robots, you need to run with it completely, and I just think the Androids of Tara, with its Prisoner of Zenda rip off, was funnier. Tom Baker was at his madcap, bug-eyed best, and Mary Tamm's aloof Romana was the perfect foil for both him and the plot.
The scene with the arrows in the archery contest was just silly without being witty. The only really funny moment in the whole ep (and it was great one, I'll admit that) was when the Doctor and Robin were so busy willy-waving in the dungeon that the guard correctly picked out Clara as the smart one. I thought the rest was a bit of a damp squib.
