Another peek at Kendis!

Kiri Moth has sent me another sketch of Kendis, you guys, check it out! As per the good advice I got in from fellow author Tia Nevitt, Kiri used pics of the classical violinist Midori as a pose guide, and now we’ve got a much neater pose here.

I’ve asked her to tweak a couple things about Kendis’ features here–this outfit, while awesome, makes her look a bit Romani–and she also looks a bit too old and a bit too much like Gina Torres. And while having a young Gina Torres play Kendis in the Faerie Blood Movie in My Brain is delicious, delicious awesomesauce, we should avoid having her look too Torres-like on the cover.

But that said? WOW. We’re getting closer and I cannot wait to see the final version!

ETA: OMG, and now I have a color version of Kendis as well! 😀 😀 Violin/fiddle players, let me know: do you think the instrument as drawn in this picture is too big? thinks it is, but I’m not sure. Let me know!

Am I remembering correctly that she's passing for normal at the start of the book? The ears are lovely, but rather obvious.

She does pass for normal at the start of the book, but this portrait's really kind of more representative of her at the end--the scene where she's playing her violin under the willow in her backyard.

I love the picture! Very cool!

I don't play violin, but I do play with fiddle players whenever I get a chance; from my perspective, the fiddle looks too wide, unless it's a viola, with which I'm insufficiently familiar. It's not a big issue and would probably only be noticed by musickers who know what violins look like, but it's kinda like the scale is off; it's like the violin is sized for an adult, but Kendis is a child. Does that make sense? The bow, however, looks perfect. *impish grin* Now it's messing with my head! *laugh*

I'm definitely getting excited about what the final cover is going to look like--this is just the Kendis pose part, the full color cover is going to include a big swoosh of magic wrapping around to the back, and the willow tree in her backyard. :D

And yeah, Dara and I have decided the instrument is a touch too big so we'll be having Kiri nudge the size on that down just a touch. But we are very, very close!
