Help Solarbird and me name our new iPads!

Thanks to shiny bonus goodness, (and to the iPad 2′s just coming out) solarbird and I have succumbed to this particular form of Apple shiny! We’ve opted for two white models, each with 64G capacity and Wi-Fi only, since we didn’t feel like shelling out for an extra 3G plan on top of what we’re already paying for my phone. We had to order them from apple.com given that they cannot be found for love or money ANYWHERE in the Puget Sound area (my lack of surprise, let me show you it), and so now we get to wait until mid-April for them to show up.

Which means of course that we have plenty of time to consider a CRITICAL QUESTION: what in the world are we going to name them?

As I’ve mentioned before our usual computer naming scheme at the Murkworks is to name all our computers after Elfquest characters. But as these are iPads, they’re not quite in the “computer” category, and neither are they in the “auxiliary devices” category, so the floor is really kind of wide open!

Here are the options we’ve considered so far:

• “Kim” and “Shego”, from Kim Possible (mmm, femmeslashtastic)
• “Ichimaitan” and “Nimaitan”, based on the Japanese counting system for flat things (hee hee hee), and also on OS tan girls
• Naming them after two Go-Backs, given that Go-Backs tend to be less clever than other elves ;) (note: “Kahvi” is already claimed as a name of Dara’s studio workstation)

Any other clever ideas? Submit your nominations now! Bonus points for any references to names that go well together in pairs, especially if they’re twins, since these are the exact same model of iPad! I’ll do an actual poll at the beginning of April. :D

Mm! If I were to go mythological, I'd go Greek mythos rather than Roman--which of course leads one to Castor and Pollux, or even Apollo and Artemis.

Of course, since we've already named budgies Starbuck and Apollo, that sort of counts Apollo out. ;)

I'm way less versed on Norse mythos than I am Greek, though.

Then again, this leads me down the path of thinking about Tolkien references, though right off the top of my head the only pair names presenting themselves to my memory are dwarves in The Hobbit. And so not my and Dara's type. ;D

Well, solarbird did point out that iPads ARE full-fledged computers in their own right, they're just smaller! Which would fit with the whole "Ember and Suntop" thing.

I don't tend to name things that don't need names for functional purposes though (such as giving desktop computers names on the network for file sharing). Until I can call my computer to do stuff for me it doesn't get a name.

All the electronics in the Murk get names. If it gets an IP address, it gets a name, and the iPads WILL be getting IP addresses. Hell, we even give names to our thumb drives and our auxiliary backup drives!

I actually like the idea of naming them after the Japanese counting system for flat things. I honestly had no idea that the Japanese had a separate counting system for things that are flat, which may be the coolest linguistic nuance I've heard of in a while.

The suggestion for Hungin and Mungin is also pretty cool. (is it really Hugin & Mugin?)

Sadly, I realized this morning that, since I've switched to PC (my last iMac was supposed to be a Blueberry, but it was clearly a Lemon), I may never get to name a computer Knife the Mac. But there's no equal partner for that.

And oh yes I forgot: yeah, Dara told me about the counting of flat things in Japanese, which makes me just giggle and giggle. Apparently there are sometimes special counter particles that you add to the Chinese numbering system in use in Japan, and sometimes entirely separate words.

We've actually already used Preserver names! We use 'em for thumb drives, since that evokes the actual function of Preservers, which is to say, storing data!

Also, the thumb drives in question are brightly colored, so that works too.
