This is yet another round of freebies downloaded from Barnes and Noble. Most of these are the latest round of classics available, but the Kowal story I happened to find while doing a search to see if her new novel was available on the ebook store yet.

Actually-free (as in, no membership or CC# required) link to "First Flight" here (http://www.tor.com/stories/2009/08/first-flight) (ePub, PDF, HTML-Zip, and MOBI links, as well as read-on-the-web and print-me links, there)... ROCKIN' story. Some folks had some minor quibbles, but she got the aviation right, which warms the cockles of this flyboy's pea-pickin' heart...

Well, yeah, any of the tor.com stories will actually be available on tor.com. Which is nice and all, but if you happen to also want them on your ereader device of choice (since most of my e-reading is in fact on the Nook or the iPhone, NOT at my computer), it's nice to have access to downloadable copies on those platforms as well. Which is why Tor.com deployed them not only to B&N, but also to Amazon for download by Kindle users.

Please keep that in mind. :)

Oh yes, and also: yes yes yes I know tor.com is also providing download copies directly, which is splendid. However, that would also mean I'd need to go through the bother of sideloading them onto my Nook, whereas if I yoink 'em off of B&N, they just automatically show up on the device. Which is a little easier and nicer, especially given that the Nook does nicer display of B&N-downloaded content than it does the sideloaded stuff.

The reason they're asking for the credit card is because of DRM. Which sucks in general, yes, I know, I've been through that argument with several different people, believe me. ;)

If this were actually a pay download I'd probably yoink it off of tor.com, since when it comes to actually buying things I prefer to go directly to publishers that provide DRM-free content. But in this case, since it's a free download anyway, don't care. :)
