And now I will spend the rest of the week trying very hard not to imagine Russell Crowe bellowing “YOIKS AND AWAY”. Hee hee hee…

Date: 2010-05-11 03:44 pm (UTC)Alan was on our local classic rock station this morning, talking about the movie - you should be able to hear the interview here (http://www.k-rock975.com/index.asp?MN=10&id=1240&CC=8)
Aaand, Russell was on Ellen yesterday, so if you didn't see it you may want to hunt around online for it - he's a funny, funny, guy!

Date: 2010-05-12 12:19 am (UTC)I really should see some more of Russell's movies - aside from Gladiator, Master and Commander and L.A. Confidential I am not familiar with his work. Anything you'd like to recommend?
And as I type, a Robin Hood trailer comes on TV. Heh.

Date: 2010-05-12 01:00 am (UTC)You've already hit on three excellent ones, but here are others depending on your movie mood:
From 1995, The Quick and the Dead. This is a western that has Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, and a very young Leonardo DiCaprio along with Russell. It was directed by Sam Raimi which should tell you something about the movie's overall style. It also has the distinction of being the only Crowe movie in the house not originally owned by me, since my housemate Paul is a Sam Raimi fan, and it's the one movie of Russell's I saw before Gladiator came out and flattened me into a wobbly pile of swoon. ;) I remember thinking when I saw it, "whoa, that Cort guy's kinda cute". ;) TQatD is a strong fave among us Russell fangirls because OMG, Cort's pretty, pretty hair. ;D
If you want to see Russell demonstrate he can be an awesome bad guy and don't mind an otherwise cheesy movie, go for Virtuosity, his one SF film to date. Denzel Washington is the lead. But do go in expecting cheese!
If you want to see Russell be a bad guy in a significantly better film, and if you like Christian Bale, go for 3:10 to Yuma, the recent remake of an old Western by the same name.
A Good Year is arguably Russell's fluffiest movie ever, based on Peter Mayle's novel by that name. I found it quirky and charming though. If you want a lot of stuff about wine and the French countryside, this is your movie.
And! State of Play, also recent, is a good solid adaptation of the BBC miniseries, which you should ALSO watch just because John Simm is also superlative. But Russell's version starts with his first scene having him sing along with Great Big Sea! :D
He's got several other movies I could find positive things to say about but that should be plenty for starters!

Date: 2010-05-12 11:39 pm (UTC)And yeah, State of Play is the one with Ben Affleck. Nice 2-hour-or-so adaptation of the much longer BBC story, and they did a decent job rewriting it to a US-based setting rather than a UK-based one, IMO. And I'm tellin' ya, I squealed out loud when Russell started bellowing along with Paddy Murphy for a minute or so of screen time. :D I didn't know it was coming at the time!
You're very welcome and I hope you'll enjoy one or more of these!
