As many of y’all know we’re heading into what’s getting called a probable record-breaking heat wave here in the greater Seattle area. Which does, in a word, suck.
It sucks extra given that the Murk does not have full-house AC. While we do have a nice little portable unit we can park in the media room, and which will therefore keep

So Dara fears she may have to conduct controlled shutdowns of our servers during the hottest parts of the day so as to prevent the boxes from overheating and frying themselves. Should this happen, mail and web services hosted by the Murk will unfortunately be affected. So if you’re wondering where any of the blogs we host went, or why our mailing lists aren’t relaying mail, or why the MurkMUSH went down, this’ll be why.
We’ll try to get notice out as we can, but that notice may by necessity be short. Keep an eye on

Thanks all, and those of you in the PNW, stay cool!

Date: 2009-07-28 06:32 pm (UTC)(It was 112 or so here yesterday. I had to actually put the air on in my car, just so I wouldn't pass out while sitting on the I-15.)

Date: 2009-07-28 07:24 pm (UTC)And yeah, no central air. Many houses here don't in fact have it; usually it's not needed. My workplace has AC, which is delightful. Dara's also very good at keeping the house habitable. It's just that getting to work and back again will be the difficult part, especially given that I'll be walking to the bus stop during the hottest part of the day. YAY!

Date: 2009-07-29 01:43 am (UTC)My biggest tip is to take cool showers often. When you get up, when you get home, and right before bed. I often have to sleep with an ice pack wrapped in a thin dish towel, in places where the ac doesn't get as cold as I'd like it.
Try to carry your umbrella with you for that walk home, because nothing beats about 5-10 degrees of bad heat like a little shade. And maybe pack a pickle for the walk, as well, to keep sodium levels good, stave off cramps, and help your body's water level stay normal. it sounds ridiculous, but take it from a band nerd from the South.
You guys don't overstress yourselves up there, and if you'd like a visit to the Sauna--I mean the South, lemme know. :P

Date: 2009-07-29 04:12 am (UTC)Dara's been working very hard to keep the house as habitable as possible. We have a bunch of fans going in addition to the portable AC unit and that's more or less helping. There are multiple ceiling fans in the house, which is good too.
Really, the bitch of it for me is less the house or work than it is getting to and from both places, mostly from work to home since that's the hottest part of the day and most of my commute is walking uphill on the way home. I've stopped frequently for cold beverages, which helps. Good point about the pickle, too; Paul's mentioned keeping salt levels up as well.
Thanks for thinking of us and sharing your wisdom!
