SPACE! The FINAL frontier!

So I know most of the known universe will be going to see Star Trek when it comes out this weekend, but for once I'm actually going to be fairly booked up with social thingamabobbies, so the chances of wedging in a Trek trek (aheh) are slim.

But out of curiosity, is anyone (local) up for doing a group Trek viewing next weekend? If so, speak up! I'll be over here going "LALALALALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU" meanwhile at everybody's movie posts until then. ;)

ETA: Turns out my Friday night plans have shifted, and we'll be shooting for a Friday night show after all. However, chances are high that I'll want to see this thing twice, so the question will stand for next weekend too!

I am so very ready for this movie. spazzkat and I were talking about how it'll be a very nice change of pace to get back to some "bright optimistic future" sort of SF, and Star Trek, when done right, delivers that in spades. Bring it on. Give me the "space is really, REALLY cool and we need to go explore it!" adventure!

And also, I hear from seimaisin, who got to see a sneak preview, that it was highly enjoyable indeed. So fingers crossed for failure to suck.

Also: I am stricken with an urge to break out "Banned from Argo" for this next Jam. If any occasion calls for resurrecting that, it's the release of a brand new franchise-rebooting Trek flick that hopefully won't actually suck. I think I even have the chords somewhere. Muahaha!

I am not sure the self-proclaimed Not Your Father's Star Trek will deliver it, but I live in hope.

"Not Your (Fill in Older Relation)'s (Thing)" taglines always kind of annoy me. I mean, it implies that the original thing is by definition inferior! Meh!

I've been wary about this the whole time, sure, but early reviews are very positive---and as I mentioned, seimasin is quite over the moon about it since she got to see it early. So I'm definitely hopeful.

And I will be singing "Banned From Argo" all week. Probably also "Temperature of Revenge" and "He's Dead Jim". :D

Oh god! That's the one that starts off "I was with the midwest crowd who stood in line for blocks", right? I don't think I've heard that in ages; it's on my Julia Ecklar that's still on tape and which I haven't been able to digitize. Wow. I need to dig that up too. Because that's also totally now trying to get back into my brain and I can't remember the words!

"Born Again Trek", yes. Ecklar's response to the original movie, Trek fans getting theirs back after 2.5 years of Star Wars being the only franchise in town. All of which was before my time, fandomwise; I was 11. Nevertheless...

Clearly you have had an unholy respite from "Banned from Argo" if you need to look up the chords, and your penance is to practice on the metafilks of it until you have them down. Probably this is the meta-est:

I have since this original post acquired "Born Again Trek" and was satisfied to hear it again; I've got a filk of it in progress now for the new film!

And I had to actually reconstruct the chords to "Banned from Argo" by ear in Jam yesterday. I couldn't find them anywhere on the net. Lyrics all over the place, but no actual chords. However, doragoon and I pulled it off just fine, despite my not having heard an actual recording of "Banned from Argo" in years. :)

Where are you thinking of seeing it and at what time? I work until 7:15, so depending on when it starts and where you're seeing it I might be able to come.
