For those of you who are opening Dreamwidth accounts

Thanks to a kindly offered invite code (thank you, kind person! You know who you are), I'm now over there with the usual ID, annathepiper. Y'all feel free to link up with me there, and/or drop a comment here to let me know who you are so's I can make with the subscribing and granting access and stuff.

Right now my plans for Dreamwidth mostly involve "playing with their code" to see if the changes they've made are interesting enough to warrant extended attention. But I'll also likely be mirroring posts over there as well.

For those of you who don't intend on joining Dreamwidth, no worries, I'm not jumping ship here. Dreamwidth may have some potentially shiny new toys to play with, but LJ's got the established userbase and name recognition, and it'll be too useful for me to give it up completely!

For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about at all, short form: Dreamwidth is the latest Livejournal clone to come into existence. Like Inksome, it's come out of the big spate of scandals going around here when Six Apart was still in charge--and a lot of folks asking the question, "Well, so if we wanted to go found our own site, what features would we like?" There's at least one ex-LJ-staffer on its founding team.

In particular I'm interested in what Dreamwidth is doing with the whole concept of Friending. They're dropping the term 'Friending' entirely, and have set up a more complex system that separates "whose journals you want to read" from "who you'd like to grant access to your own locked stuff".

So anyway, if you're over there, say hi. Or not. :)

Huh. This looks a little interesting. I hadn't heard anything of it yet, but I also haven't been bloggy lately...

Yeah, there's a few things of potential interest here. For me, as I mentioned in the main post, they're doing intriguing things to the code. But there are also several former LJ staffers involved, either as actual staff or as volunteers. So far this seems to be the most serious of the LJ spinoffs I've seen yet. It'll remain to be seen if it gets its legs under it and hangs around for a while.

I'm in the weird headspace of not being sure whether I want to try Dreamwidth or just kind of nuke my blogs from orbit. Eventually I will figure this out. ;) (Of course, it also means I'm not paying for it out of the gate, so I suppose I'll have to hunt down a code eventually. Hmmm.)

Well, your choice right now is either find a code, or else put down three bucks for a minimum-level pay account. (I'm actually vaguely considering if I'm interested enough for the three bucks, but the fact that I'm waffling at all suggests probably not yet.)

Though yeah, having one's ID staked out on all the LJ clones does get a bit hard to keep track of after a while!

I hear Dreamwidth is so cool, the person who supposedly likes LJ so much they ran to be our user representative volunteers (http://wiki.dwscoalition.org/notes/Volunteers_In_Waiting#legomymalfoy) for them.

That said, I'm not especially interested until invites are more plentiful. If I'm to start a new blog, I'm most likely going to move "up" into a WP blog hosted somewhere else with its own domain.

Yeah, there are several former LJ staffers involved with the project. That gives it a few more points of interest to me, although not yet enough to make me plunk down money for an actual paid account yet. I'll play around with the beta a bit first.

Though there's something to say for hosting one's own blog, too. I'm very happy with having been able to install Wordpress here at the Murk.
