So I didn't finish up talking about the events of yesterday--and they are well worth mentioning, since they involved the Match Game SF panel headed up by
kevin_standlee. HY-larious. For those of you not familiar with this, this is an SF version of the old game show "Match Game", in which two contestants try to match up answers from six panelists on fill-in-the-blank type questions. The folks who do the panel even play it the same way the original game show used to go: doing the first half family-friendly, and the second no-holds-barred. This hearkens back to how they used to film the show in five-episode blocks, with three in the morning and then the other two after very long martini lunches. Which is why Thursday and Friday's shows tended to be quite a bit more freewheeling with the panelists' responses. ;)
Anyway, it was a lot of fun. Our very own
mamishka got to be on the panel, and
spazzkat and
solarbird and I had fun just watching from the audience, although Dara had to bail early to go work on the newsletter. I was very pleased to tell Kevin today that they did a wonderful job.
This morning I've so far attended a panel on blogging and whether it's an effective tool for authors, or just an excuse for vacuuming the cat; notable attendees at this were
jpsorrow and
mdhenry. I was then motivated to pop down to the dealer's room afterward and grab books 2 and 3 of Mr. Palmatier's trilogy, specifically just because I enjoy reading his journal and I am going to enjoy reading his books as well.
(That, folks, being an example of an author making a sale based on the strength of his blogging! So yeah, blogging doesn't always have to be about vacuuming the cat.)
I have also picked up
katatomic's 3rd Greywalker novel, and two books from the Nightshade Press table: a new paperback from an author I didn't recognize but which had an interesting blurb on it, Mark Teppo's Lightbreaker; and, the pirate anthology that includes a Temeraire story by
naominovik. That's five more books purchased at this con, which brings the 2009 book tally total up to 26! I think I'm done buying books for now. *^_^*;;
I was going to go to the Dr. Horrible Singalong panel at 2, but it was ridiculously full and I didn't feel like standing up while watching the whole thing. Besides, as y'all may remember, I'm perfectly capable of songvirusing myself with the Bad Horse Chorus at the drop of a hat.
Plans for the rest of the afternoon, I think, are going to involve just hanging out and occasionally wandering around. Not too much on the schedule I feel like attending before the Masquerade tonight--though speaking of costumes, I must give a shoutout to the guy who had an awesome Wash costume that involved a fake girder and a sign that said "SCREW YOU WHEDON". Har!
More later!
