Okay, sure, this isn't actually the first day of the convention--but it's really the first day of it for me. [livejournal.com profile] spazzkat and I only got down here last night, and that really didn't count; [livejournal.com profile] solarbird was feeling seriously ill with a stomach ailment, so we really didn't do much other than get settled it at the hotel, get dinner, and get registered.

But it's worth noting that on the way down we did see a rainbow. Paul and I both took that as a positive omen for how the con was going to go. And along those lines, it was awesome to catch up with [livejournal.com profile] mamishka, well and thoroughly back from the East Coast, with whom we are of course rooming as we do every year. Meems has come armed with several awesome t-shirts, including one that reads APPROVED BY THE COUNCIL OF MONSTERS and another one with Captain Hammer on it from Dr. Horrible. I have to admit that devoted and loyal Browncoat though I am, part of me is now going to be thinking of Nathan Fillion as Captain Hammer every so often instead of Captain Mal.

Today, though! Dara woke up feeling much better, so that was all good, and we scattered off to our various panels. So far today I've sat in on a couple of writer panels: one on Writerly Friendships (featuring [livejournal.com profile] katatomic, [livejournal.com profile] mdhenry, and [livejournal.com profile] blue_succubus), and one immediately following on editing your novel once you've finished it (also featuring [livejournal.com profile] katatomic as well as a couple other writers with whom I was not familiar). In that latter panel in particular I was pleased to hear that Lizzy Shannon actually has work out through Dragon Moon Press--the folks who published my former Weyrwoman from Telgar Weyr, Deby Fredericks.

Then Dara and I met up with [livejournal.com profile] technoshaman at the 3pm Kitten Sundae concert. Kitten Sundae is [livejournal.com profile] vixyish, [livejournal.com profile] stealthcello, and of course the redoubtable [livejournal.com profile] s00j, and that was all good too. They did songs to go with the various books by Cat Valente, including the one that's just come out, Palimpsest, and readings from the Ravens in the Library anthology as well.

I have thus far purchased a total of four books, including the three Goblin books by [livejournal.com profile] jimhines, which I have been meaning to read for ages, and a new one I hadn't heard of but which sounded kind of cool and steampunky: The Court of the Air by Stephen Hunt.

(This incidentally brings my total number of books purchased in 2009 up to 21, because I've also recently purchased Ann Aguirre's Blue Diablo. And I don't think I'm done purchasing books at this con yet. I'm probably going to pass the number of books I've actually read so far this year, too.)

I've also purchased a nice zippered sweatshirt with a Norwescon logo on it, and I've bumped into an old acquaintance I'd seen at a few Telgar Weyr Gathers; we had a nice little chat about Telgar Weyr possibly resurrecting itself, and about Wendy Pini doing Masque of the Red Death. The rest of the evening is probably going to involve Vixy's 7pm concert, some form of dinner, and generally hanging out.

So far, despite a shaky start, the con's a win!

The Court of the Air is very good! I read it a few weeks ago, and enjoyed it thoroughly. It's very elegantly written. I think you'll like it.

Oh! Oh! Almost forgot! New Dresden Files is out!

I haven't had a good solid few hours to sit and read it, which I really need for Dresden books because I basically get sucked in and spit out the other side without stopping for breath. :)
