Bouzouki!

As in, "His luggage, however, did not arrive. Also not with him is his gate-checked bouzouki. I can set him up with spare pajamas and toothbrush and such, but I do not have a bouzouki here."

spazzkat opines that by the end of the week, Neil will have a dozen bouzoukis. If he doesn't, his fandom is slacking.

(Mr. Merritt, however, cannot have mine. Although I ouch for his instrument not keeping up with him, and I hope it catches up with him in short order. Along with the rest of his luggage! But especially the bouzouki.)

Ah, but I bet Mr. Merritt carried his ukulele on with him so he'll be OK.

Though it's still teh suck when the airlines manage to lose things that they insist you turn over to their "care."

Indeed. This very thing is why I have not bothered in years to take an instrument bigger than a flute to any convention requiring me to get on a plane. I'd live in fear of my guitar getting squashed!
