In which those of us available post-Christmas have us a Jam to further break in the newer guitars; in which I break out "Old Black Rum" to do something else in D; and in which
pocketnaomi gets comfier with "Elf Glade" vocals. Songs: "Captain Kidd", "Old Black Rum", "Elf Glade", "Chemical Worker's Song (Process Man)", "Lukey".
The last Jam of 2008 turned out small, not terribly surprisingly, since this is only three scant days after Christmas. But we still had five on hand, and that was certainly enough to give the newer guitarists in the group a chance to practice chord changes as well as actually singing a bit along with playing. We started off early this time since
solarbird had to leave early to get
spazzkat from the airport, but that worked out too. Fortunately the slush on the streets outside didn't stop anybody from getting up here, either!
First up was "Captain Kidd", which remains the simplest song for guitar work out of any of the songs we've played with to date. It turned out that Naomi needed vocals to keep track of where she was in the song, so I wound up singing it. It's hard to sing "Captain Kidd" slow--as I've posted about before, I tend to run away with the tempo. But we did okay keeping it down to a sane pace for
kendaer and Naomi to keep up with, and JT did mention he's getting the hang of the changes, so yay.
Naomi asked for something else in the key of D, which pretty meant more GBS off the top of my head--and of the songs of theirs I know how to play in D, "Old Black Rum" was easiest. So I walked through the chords for the others, and we took a couple of stabs at that. That didn't work too badly, even though that's another song I have a bit of a time singing slowly. The only real point of confusion was what JT and Naomi would want to play instead of B minor on "day" in the chorus, and we worked out that they could do D there instead, keeping it a three chord song for them.
That was about enough guitaring for JT and Naomi, then, so we jumped over to a few takes of "Elf Glade" so that they could practice taking turns at the vocals. The first time take was JT on lead, and he swapped off to Naomi for the other two takes; Naomi cracked a joke about the lead vocal on this song really needing to be the "elf", which made JT crack a joke in return about really being more of a "troll".
"Picknose should not sing this song," Dara affirmed. Which nobody but she and I got, since we were the only Elfquest fans in the room. (For those of you who aren't Elfquest fans, trust us on this 'un; you don't want Picknose singing.)
Naomi got comfy enough with the vocals that she even asked for a second pass just to make sure, so we got in a bit of geeking about where to get in proper breaths to carry enough power through the choruses. Especially on the final verse and chorus--since that's where whoever's taking lead has the longest unbroken stretch of lyrics. It's a challenge to work out, but I think it's still slowly coming together for us all. I myself am slowly improving on being able to play this thing without looking at my fingers the whole time.
JT asked for "Chemical Worker's Song" next, for the sake of doing something entirely vocal. We took a couple of passes through this, and even gunned up the tempo a bit for the second take, which helped JT get a better handle on the words. I still need to get a better handle on playing a drum line along with Dara, though; she's used to playing along with
mamishka, and I don't play the same drum lines that Meems does. I just also need to get better merging drums with somebody else, too, since this is still very new to me.
Naomi dropped out for the last song, though, since her hands were tired and she needed to leave in time to get home to check in with
cflute on Skype. But JT did want to take a bit of a stab at "Lukey", and although we didn't make it all the way through the song, we did work a bit with the structure of the verses so that he could get an idea where all the changes went.
Then we called Pie, since Dara had to get ready to go anyway to pick up Paul. The pie: marionberry, courtesy of Naomi!
(I wound up whipping through a few GBS songs on my own after Pie, so those didn't really count for official Jam purposes. But it's still great fun to do "Goin' Up" with Dara anyway.)
Next Jam and the first of 2009 is January 11. As always, if any of y'all reading this want in on the Jam, RSVP by dropping a comment and letting me know you're coming so we know how much pie to get!
