Why going out on the roads today was a bad idea: an object lesson

So today was my very last saline fill. This is of interest not only as a milestone for Operation Rebuild Anna's Boobies, but also because as those of you in the Seattle area know, the weather is sucking. So are the roads. And as solarbird is a better driver than I am, I made sad faces at her until she agreed to drive me to the appointment.

(I could have rescheduled, but that would have been difficult for a number of reasons, all of which are involved with the fact that I start at Big Fish next week, and the folks in my surgeon's office are going to be out later this week. So that would have necessitated schedule juggling and probable insurance juggling, since what's left of my insurance from the job I just left expires at the end of the month.)

Anyway, Dara reluctantly agreed to drive. We got there after one incident of getting stuck near the surgeon's office--Dara had missed her expected turn and I'd mis-remembered which way to go from a side street instead, and we got stuck turning around. Annoying, but we got out of it and were only about ten minutes late to the appointment. The saline fill got done and dealt with, and I don't have to go back for the final procedure until February. Even as late as April if necessary, depending on the needs of my new work schedule. So that's all good.

We stopped a couple of places on the way home and got lunch and various errands done. There was one brief annoyance in the parking lot at Lake Forest Park Town Centre when a woman unexpectedly BACKED INTO US because she didn't realize we were behind her. Fortunately she only dinged our front bumper, which was pretty dinged up anyway, and therefore it wasn't worth getting her insurance info. But still, annoying.

And Dara was wise, it turned out, to fear coming back up our hill. We made it literally almost all the way up, until we got to the little mini-street that leads right into our driveway. The Honda's stuck out there now, in sight of the house. Dara and two neighborhood ladies are trying to shovel a path to let it make it the rest of the way up into our garage. They made me come instead because I started to be wiped out from the most upper body exertion I've had in some time.

So, um, yeah. I don't think either of us are going to be doing much the rest of the night.

Yeah, it would be a tragedy if the ocean got some salt in it. That would really mess up the environment.

Yes, I saw the front end of that article in a print paper while we were out.

And actually, given all the amount of snow that we have on the ground, I'd just as soon do without rain to add even more moisture. We're already in enough danger of urban flooding once a serious melt starts in anyway.

We're in Salem and we ventured out today as well...and nearly got backed into by a lady who just didn't see us behind her either. It took 3 or 4 blasts of the horn before the lady even looked behind her and noticed we were there. Must be the day for everyone who backs up without looking to try to smash people. Glad it was only a small ding and that you made it home (or close enough to home!) safe.

Oof, yeah, I expect driving conditions all over the northern part of the country are sucky, really. So not surprised they're sucking where you are too.

No, noooo! Take that idiot's insurance details and make her pay! Otherwise she'll think she can go around reversing without looking with freaking impunity. If it costs her MONEY, she might avoid doing it to someone else.

Here's the thing:

It would have been way more trouble than it would have been worth, especially given that it would have been difficult to convince the insurance people that it wasn't our fault--because in the vast majority of situations like this, it would be the car behind, not the car in front, that would have been the one at fault.

Also, really, the damage is negligible. The bumper was already kind of dinged up anyway, and this wasn't any more severe than the abuse the thing's already taken.

Were I in the neighborhood, I'd be happy to help shovel or push. My car was stuck for the better part of two days, I well know the suckage factor there.

BTW, tonight... 5 to 9 inches of snow mixed with ice and sleet. Chicago weather FTW...or is that WTF? XD

Thank you for the thought! Dara did eventually make it in after an hour and a half of work and the car is safely re-ensconced, thankfully. We are both very grateful that we don't have to go anywhere again for the next few days. Especially given that we have more snow coming in tonight!

We're all very stunned by this ongoing weather. I just got off the phone with my brother in Kentucky a little while ago; he was whomperjawed to hear that we'd had a foot of snow on the ground!
