Last little bit of leave
Oct. 8th, 2008 10:41 amSaturday night I went to my very first Gaia Consort concert, which as I understand it is actually going to be one of the last Gaia Consort concerts, because the group is about to reform into Bone Poets Orchestra. I wanted to go though for a couple of reasons. One,
technoshaman is an ardent fan and has been plugging their music to me almost as heavily as I plug Great Big Sea. Two, two people on my very own Friends list are part of the group,
stealthcello and
solcita! And I wanted to show them some support.
Sunnie and Betsy, y'all did splendidly. The string section, I think, was providing my highest level of enjoyment for the show. <3
Kudos go to
mamishka for getting tickets for
solarbird and me. While we were there, we got to say hi to the aforementioned
technoshaman as well as
kindredsgirl, Liz Who Has No LJ, and Torin, another longstanding friend of ours. The show itself was enjoyable as well, and I wound up plunking down some money for Vitus Dance, the most recent GC album.
It is however worth noting that of all the songs they performed, the one that stood out for me the strongest was the new one that will be the first Bone Poets Orchestra song. I shall look forward to seeing how the group's style changes during this transition; in the meantime, I've downloaded all the freebie MP3s off the GC site, and may well be buying the rest of the albums via iTunes.
Other than that, the last few days have been pretty low-key. I've been starting to feel more normal, which is good, since I have to go back to work tomorrow. I've gotten caught up paying bills, watched a bunch of Due South with
risu, and read like crazy. I spent a good chunk of Sunday cleaning up my and Dara's bedroom and bathroom, which wore me out quite a bit, but in a good way. And I've picked up my guitar again to noodle with it, inspired by Dara buying herself a cheap violin to play with and see if she likes it well enough to get a real one.
Today, in just a little while in fact, I go see Dr. McMillan for another saline fill. And
mamishka is hopefully going to come over and watch more stuff with me. We've been working on Moonlight, since the Great Sookie Stackhouse Marathon has me in a vampire mood.

Date: 2008-10-08 06:10 pm (UTC)Ooh did you know there's a new Paul Gross movie out now? It's called Passchendaele . . . I haven't seen it yet but it sounds good.

Date: 2008-10-08 06:37 pm (UTC)I do have to agree, though, that the string trio was the best I've ever seen it... and Sunnie doubling on backing vocals is a win. (They used to use Ed WINOLJ for that high part in the chorus of "Cry Freedom", but then Ed didn't have much else to do... Sunnie blends well with Sue (
I snagged the DVD; I'd be happy to bring it over sometime and watch it with you on y'all's big-screen if you like; it sure beats my 19" LCD and computer speakers... :)
And yay for feeling up to doing stuff!

Date: 2008-10-08 10:26 pm (UTC)I've started listening to my new Gaia Consort playlist, BTW, and I've now heard the studio version of "Family"; I immediately recognized it from the show, of course. I think I liked the live performance better. Ditto for "Evolve", though that's a solid song as well. The backup vocals were indeed very nifty, and they hit some splendid chords between 'em at certain points.
As for the DVD, sure, whenever works out to be appropriate. I'm sure there'll be a good time at some point, even if you won't be able to join us this year either for Turkey Day or Longest Night.
Yay indeed for returning energy. :)

Date: 2008-10-09 12:11 am (UTC)Netflix has all of the DVDs, and they just came out with a 'complete series' edition of all 3 seasons for around $30 on Amazon. It's only 6 episodes or so a season but it's really really good. :)
