Post for introductions
Oct. 1st, 2008 02:15 pmSo I've had a few new folks Friending me as of late, and I thought I'd do a quick post about who I am and to give all you new folks listening in a chance to introduce yourselves to me and to each other.
In no particular order, I am:
A writer. I've been working at writing novels for professional publication since 2003. I have three finished novels, one of which has made interesting progress, one of which is getting looked at by agents, and one of which needs me to get over my latest medical thing so I can resume editing it.
A musician. I'm strictly amateur about it, in the sense that I have no aspirations past having folks come over to my house every so often and play music with me; I play music because I like it, and feel that the world is a better place when I'm contributing music to it. I play flute, piccolo, guitar, bouzouki, and mandolin, and I favor Celtic-flavored music with a side helping of Elvis. I am most heavily favoring guitar these last few years, and am hopeful of getting myself a better one so that I can join
solarbird for serious busking next summer. Anybody local to the Puget Sound area, if you're interested in showing up for my jamming sessions, talk to me!
Bisexual. I tend to favor boys as a rule, but my beloved
solarbird is a distinct exception to this. So is Katee Sackhoff from Battlestar Galactica, Jewel Staite from Firefly, and several characters from Elfquest.
Agnostic. I have no particular religious affiliation myself, but I have a healthy respect for other people's faiths. Were I to actually commit to any particular deity, it'd probably be Brigid of the Celtic mythos. 'Cause hey, goddess of healing, poetry, music, and the forge. She's right up my alley.
A breast cancer survivor. I was diagnosed with stage 0 DCIS last fall and have been spending many months since then dealing with that. As of this writing I am cancer-free, and am in fact in the middle of recovering from breast reconstruction surgery.
A voracious reader. I post a lot of quick book reviews on this journal and have since last year been logging my reading efforts. I topped out at 104 books last year, and am looking to see if I can meet or pass that number this year. I favor science fiction, fantasy, romantic suspense, mystery, occasional horror, and the occasional general fiction book. My favorite authors are J.R.R. Tolkien, Jim Butcher, Julie Czerneda, Elizabeth Peters/Barbara Michaels, and several fine folks who are in fact listening in on this journal.
A cat person. The Murkworks, my household, currently harbors two young orange tabbies named Fred and George, after the twins in the Harry Potter novels. They are fine, handsome, smart cats. And they photograph well, too!
A raving Great Big Sea fan. If you hang around here for more than five minutes, you will see me exult about Great Big Sea, my favorite band. They are fun. They are gorgeous. And they are personally responsible for making me take up instruments with strings, since I looked at them and said THAT! THAT IS WHAT I WANT TO PLAY! Also, my GBS fandom has led me to quite a few other fine bands, such as Carbon Leaf, Seven Nations, the Young Dubliners, La Bottine Souriante, the Fables, the Irish Descendants, and more.
Those are the high points! I invite any of you all listening in to drop me comments about any of these things that sound interesting to you, and please feel free to comment here as well to tell me about yourselves and what you do and what you love. As we say in Great Big Sea fandom, grab a chair and raise a jar. There's always room for more.
