And now, some things that do not suck
Jan. 3rd, 2008 07:21 pm- Coming home to find that, even though it's late as a Christmas/Solstice present, the box set of Doctor Who: The Complete Second Series is waiting for me on my computer. Yay, Box of Hot Time Lord!
- Due to extreme weather suckage (the sort of hard, windy shower that blows all the rain nearly horizontal and almost rips your umbrella out of your hands and makes it difficult to walk), being presented with peppermint-schnapps-laden hot chocolate almost as soon as I get home.

So after watching that whole first season of Torchwood, I'm curious about Dr. Who. Torchwood is a spinoff of that, right? I've never actually watched Dr. Who (new or old version). Tell me more (please) . . .

Yes, Torchwood is a spinoff of Doctor Who--specifically the new series version. Jack Harkness, the lead character of Torchwood, first shows up in the Ninth Doctor's tenure, which is the first season of the new series. Torchwood in general is also a recurring plot point all throughout the new series Doctor episodes, up to and including an episode with Ten that gives you the actual backstory for how Torchwood got founded in the first place.
You should definitely start with Nine, though. Unlike with Classic Doctor, where continuity is fairly loose, the continuity in the new series is important. Stuff that happens to Ninth Doctor is important to build up to what happens to Tenth Doctor later, especially the transition between Nine and Ten.
You don't need to watch any Classic Doctor in order to get started on Ninth Doctor, but if you have the time and inclination, certain classic episodes would provide helpful backstory. My best recommendation is "Genesis of the Daleks", which is a Fourth Doctor storyline. It also has the added bonus of being one of the episodes where Sarah Jane Smith is one of the Companions--and she actually shows up in a Tenth Doctor episode. :)
Anything else you'd like to know, by all means feel free to ask!
