annathepiper: (Musical Jack)

In which we don't play much, but what we do play is from Meg Davis and [livejournal.com profile] solarbird, and in which we have razzleberry pie! Songs: "Elf Glade", "Leaffall Three (Anthocyanins)".

Special note, mostly for [livejournal.com profile] sutures1 but also for anyone else local who might want to join us: the next scheduled Jam is in three weeks, not two, in order to accommodate Christmas weekend. So this'll be the 30th, for anyone who's counting. (Also, here, another shiny new musical-themed icon. Just because [livejournal.com profile] crymeariver_ makes very pretty Master and Commander icons, and because all things are improved by Jack Aubrey with a violin.)

But for now, let's talk about today's Jam!

Ragamuffin is finally settling into his new strings. My pre-Jam tuning needed hardly any attention at all, so after a few minor adjustments I just belted my way through a few Great Big Sea ditties just because I could: bits of "Trois Navires de Ble", "Jack Hinks", "Old Black Rum", "Mari-Mac", "Lukey", and "Clearest Indication". Dara sang along with me on some bits, cheerfully glossing over not knowing some of the words. It must be noted that in more than one instance, she belted out words louder than I did, especially in "Mari-Mac". I still can't sing it in the GBS recorded key, even though I keep gamely trying. Rags just sounds best playing it in E minor, what can I say? ^_^

Once [livejournal.com profile] technoshaman and [livejournal.com profile] cflute showed up, the first thing we wound up tackling was "Elf Glade". I am getting better at the overall song structure, though I'm still not solid on the riffs. But this time around Callie started breaking out the bass flute to add some ornamentation in between the verses, which was pretty neat and which requires further experimentation.

Most of the Jam, though, went to playing with a composition of Dara's, currently titled "Leaffall Three (Anthocyanins)". And that was pretty awesome. She and Callie worked through the melody line of what she'd done, engaging in heavy music geeking as Callie made various notational suggestions. Most notably, realizing that Dara had written the piece out in 3/4 time, but that it'd make a lot more rhythmic sense in 6/8.

Me, I sat over there with the guitar and tried to pick out a chord line. Since the piece is in the key of D, that gave me the starting chords of D, G, and A. I was surprised and pleased to hear places where I wanted an E minor or an A7 chord, so the song's at minimum a five-chorder. There may be more; I need to work through it line by line and see what sounds good when. It's an interesting exercise, since I'm doing this entirely by ear. It is, it must be said, exceedingly cool to be working out chords to a thing composed by your lifemate. ^_^

Meanwhile, Dara informs us that she has more music in her head for this than what we have written down so far, which is also pretty neat; there's still-undocumented string section activity, for example. It will be fun to keep working on this and see how solid we can make it. Callie in fact made Dara get out more of her snippets that she'd done during NaNoteWriMo, what Dara called Nanosprints, and they played for a bit with those, too. We may do more!

The pie was one we had to bake, but this was by no means a bad thing, as it filled the house with the smell of baking pie. And the pie itself was "razzleberry", a mix of raspberry and blackberry, it looked like. Quite tasty when warm from the oven, and covered with whipped cream.
