For those of you over on IJ and using Semagic

Anybody got Semagic working for logging into InsaneJournal and not throwing off the repeated "Malformed login response, web menus will be messed up" message? I've gotten Semagic set up so I can cross-post to here, GJ, and IJ if I wish, but every time I try to jump over to the IJ account, Semagic throws off that error.

I did post this question to ljwin32_sema, but was told that InsaneJournal apparently is configured wrong, and that if I didn't like the message I just should skip logging in. Only when I tried that, I still got the message, so something else is clearly amiss here. Anybody able to shed some enlightenment?

ETA 11:18pm: dragovianknight informs me that there seems to be an issue with using Semagic to post to IJ for free vs. paid accounts; the problem doesn't repro if you're logging in with a paid account. As per his sage advice I have opened up a support request over yonder to ask 'em if they'll peek at this. Thanks, dragovianknight!

I've never gotten that message using ::checks:: Semagic 1.7.0.7. I did have it refuse to post to IJ, but that, oddly enough, was solved by unticking the "spellcheck before posting" box.

For the record, I do have a permanently insane account; could that be the difference?

Possibly! But just to eliminate any possibility of different settings, what do your server settings look like, on the login dialog for Semagic? Mine look like this:

Server: www.insanejournal.com
Port: 80
Path: /interface/flat
API: Livejournal

SSL checkbox is not checked on, Secure Password is, Use IE cookies is not.

Hrmm. One does therefore wonder whether it's due to my having a free account, then! I can't think of what else it might be. Thank you very kindly for your input. :)

I just tried logging in with a free account, and I got the same message, so that does seem to be the problem.

You might try putting in a service request to at least let them know there's a problem.

Someone else in statements said that IJ was having server issues or something like that.

I noticed that it was being slow and pokey tonight, yeah, but this has been regular behavior for me since last night, when I set up my Semagic to talk to it. I'm wondering if it's being weird for me because I have a free account, or whether it's something else.

This ain't the answer you're looking for, but it might be better...

Apparently they've done a heck of a lot more work on Deepest Sender since I chucked it to the side in favor of Logjam; they just posted 0.8 yesterday with a "metric tonne" of new features, including editing old posts and such....

And there's always ljupdate, which is an Emacs client of all things...

Both of these will work on anything that will run their respective platforms (Firefox2 and Emacs), i.e. Windows, Mac, Linux, SlowLaris, you name it... and they're both advertised to work with multiple journals.

Good luck, whatever approach you take....

Eh, from what I see from the comments further up the thread, this likely actually isn't a fault of the client--so there's no reason for me to actually change clients. (And I'm perfectly happy with the one I've got, which does everything I need it to do. I probably won't bother to change LJ clients until I actually change computers, and I can't buy a new Mac yet, so!)

Thanks for chiming in, though. :) Meanwhile, I have filed a support request over on IJ to ask 'em if they can peek at things and see if they have something busted in their config for free users.

thanks for finding out kind of what's going on that error message was driving me nuts and I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. but if it's something with their setup...then it looks like I just have to be patient.

You're very welcome. I'm still waiting for an answer on my support request, but I'm given to understand that the IJ admin guy is bending over backwards to accommodate the influx of users there. So I don't mind waiting. :)

Actually, I think Squeaky may have fixed the issue; it's gone away for me recently. :) I haven't posted about it yet since I haven't received an actual reply to my support request.
