It's a little weird going back and reading the very first book in Charlaine Harris' Lily Bard series, now that I've already read two of the later ones--it means that at least one of the characters I know is going to bite it later is walking around doing things in this plot, which is a tad bit disconcerting. ;) However, it's kind of cool to finally get the opening bits of Lily's story, as well as her actual backstory.
As with the later Lily Bard books, this one is a very compact little story. It's almost more about the atmosphere of the small Southern town of Shakespeare as it is the actual murder, which is what keeps me coming back to read these. Harris is more concise in these novels than she is over in her Sookie Stackhouse novels, and like Lily herself, it really does rather work. Three stars.
