Apparently I'm just in a Mary Stewart sort of mood right now, because not only have I just read Airs Above the Ground, I've picked up three more of her books to read as well. I think it may have something to do with the general sort of pleasantly quaint feel to her stories--things that call themselves thrillers and which are absolutely tame by today's standards, and yet are engaging and pleasantly suspenseful nonetheless.

And this one was certainly a lightly entertaining read. Oh god yes, quaint--I caught myself half-expecting the 24-year-old heroine to jump the 17-year-old boy she was travelling with, and then was simultaneously pleasantly surprised when she didn't and not surprised at all due to the decade in which this book was originally written. As with the other Mary Stewart I read earlier this year, The Gabriel Hounds, there's also a huge amount of time spent on scenery and less than I would have liked on plot; in this book in particular, Stewart shows far too great a fondness for the word "charming".

Still, though, it was fun and fluffily suspenseful, and Stewart's affection for the plot point that drives the action--a lost Lipizanner horse--shows strongly. I liked the heroine and her young companion, and while there was less of a romantic angle than is my tastes (which makes sense again due to the era in which the book was written), there's still some nice chemistry between her and her husband. Three stars.

Mary Stewart! Love her!

ROFL - I kinda like the idea of the 24-yr old jumping the 17-yr old...
