I was going to start this post by quoting MST3K's "MIKE BROKE THE HUBBLE" line, but [livejournal.com profile] solarbird pointed out, quite rightly, that my name is not Mike.

Guh. Where to start with this? Dara had told me that there was a whole flotilla of Debian security updates that we couldn't install without upgrading to the latest release of Debian. Okay, I said, I'd take care of upgrading the servers since she was up to her neck in dealing with classes and stuff. Upgrading newmoon and lodestone was fairly trivial--I did have to upgrade the kernel on both of those from 2.2-flavored Linux to 2.4-flavored, but that went pretty smoothly. All I wound up having to do was plunk down the appropriate kernel packages, reboot, and then proceed with the full distribution upgrade. I thought, foolishly, that I could do the same on door. *pause for tired and hysterical laughter* Well. I know better now, DON'T I?

Anyway, early yesterday afternoon I tried to do the kernel upgrade on door, the exact same one I'd done on newmoon and lodestone. Then I rebooted door. And door said "NO NETWORK FOR YOU" and I said "shit" and went to go get Dara. Who then proceeded to tear her hair out dealing with adventures in smacking door in the head, as it proceeded to:
  • Fail to talk to our installed network cards
  • Fail to let Dara compile a new version of the driver--and never mind that I'd also screwed up by not downloading the damn source for the kernel upgrade; Dara couldn't get an actual Linux kernel dev (hi [livejournal.com profile] fenton) to compile the damn thing either
  • Fail to like the new network cards Dara went out and bought for it
  • Decide we really didn't need a CD-ROM drive either, which required us to send [livejournal.com profile] spazzkat out to buy a new one

There were many, many other things that went catastrophically and annoyingly wrong, but those are the highlights. Now, about 36 very exhausting hours later, my poor lifemate has managed to haul door's stubborn ass back online, so we're talking to the world again. We're not a hundred percent back, but we're getting there.

Abject apologies to anyone inconvenienced by our downtime, and profoundest thanks to [livejournal.com profile] blargh and [livejournal.com profile] fenton for their assistance. Especially [livejournal.com profile] blargh, who accepted my desperate long-distance call for help with nary a blink. Also, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] spazzkat for CD-ROM-fetching, moral support, and other helpful suggestions regarding future backup methods that won't suck. Hopefully. And thanks to [livejournal.com profile] risu for moral support. And tea. Tea is good. All you guys rock.

Bad Gerren! You aren't supposed to give Door wine!

She gets all tipsy and sloshy and silly.

(Reposted 'cause I forgot to use my elfin gliderboy.)

But... I thought *nix was TEH AWESOME.

Sorry, I was channeling the Windoze dev who also lives in this house. Forgive me. I'll go beat him with a spoon now.

I got your other voicemail last night, but it was after 11pm, so didn't call back - sorry. Glad to see you're all sorted out though!

Finagle's Law (http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/F/Finagles-Law.html) strikes again! Naturally an important production server would die when you performed a routine upgrade!
