Now that I have a proper Doctor icon (two, in fact), I can provide appropriate visual aids to any Doctor-related squee that might happen to take place around here. Yay! Icons snurched and duly credited on my userpics page to
cheesygirl, who posted them (along with a lot of others) over here. They're all icons from the first ep of the new round, "Smith and Jones".
On a related note, for those of you who haven't actually seen these yet, I must share two delightful pieces of Doctor fanart by mimi-na on deviantart.com:
Doctor's Girls
omg DOCTORZ
These make me Happy. Particularly Little Fourth Doctor all tangled up in his scarf, though Six's coat all colorful and Nine's huge gun are both very cool.
Last but not least, some comments on the actual eps we've watched lately at the Murk!
We watched the Christmas Special Saturday night, and while I'd heard some initial rumblings that it was annoying, it actually turned out to be more fun than I expected. The female guest lead character, Donna (I can't call her a Companion, since she wasn't one), was certainly annoying as a person in several ways and I think she would have grated as an actual Companion... but in a one-shot appearance, I think she was fine.
The effects were very, very cool. I really liked the sequence with the TARDIS chasing after Donna in the taxi, and Ten leaning out the door to try to get Donna to jump to him. The BBC really pulled out the stops on that, as well as on the Racnoss Empress and the visit to the very beginnings of the formation of the Earth.
I also really liked the ending. Half of me really appreciates that Donna actually told the Doctor no, even while the other half of me wants to smack her and say, "Look, if the Doctor shows up with the TARDIS and asks you if you'd like to come on a trip with him, especially if he's Tenth Doctor, the correct answer is YES!" ;)
Also? OMG, all his little reactions about Rose. Sniff. It was very clear that he was reeling from losing her even as he pulled it together enough to help Donna and stop the Racnoss. The way he delivered his invitation to Donna, though... all desolate-like... damn, that slew me. So did his last choked-sounding line, "Her name was Rose."
Last night we watched "Smith and Jones", which was a very nice followup. Once again the effects were extremely cool, with the highlights being the transporting of the hospital up to the Moon and the overall look of the Judoon.
And, of course, there's Martha. I really like her and I think she's very promising; I'm hoping she'll continue to be as cool as she is out of the gate. I like how she's got the whole cool grace under fire thing going on, that she's not only bright but also fast to figure things out, and that she's quite smoothly witty. She'll be a fun contrast to Rose, who was certainly less about the intellect and more about the heart and impulse. That said--I did note that Martha does seem to have in common with Rose that she has a sense of inquisitive wonder. And, she's not at all unaware of the charisma of the Doctor. ;)
I think one of my favorite things that she said to him is how in her book, "Doctor" is a title that must be earned. And his immediate "I'd better get on it then" was good. So were all his little "oh that's GOOD" reactions to the various quick leaps of understanding she kept showing. He was clearly impressed with her, and it'll be interesting to see how it plays out that she keeps traveling with him.
Tonight we're watching "The Shakespeare Code", and the first thing that popped through my brain about this was "Whoa hey, Shakespeare's kinda hot." Muah! And bwah! Flirting with Martha and the Doctor! "Fifty-seven academics just punched the air!" Bwah!
Meanwhile, wow, the Doctor really misses Rose, doesn't he, mentioning her all distracted-like like that to Martha? And the young witch hurling Rose's name at him like a gauntlet. "That name keeps me fighting!" Nice. Also, giggles for the Harry Potter references!
And I'm really digging the whole idea of this episode being all about the power of words. ^_^ And Shakespeare knowing exactly what was going on with both the Doctor and Martha. Very nice indeed.
Very much looking forward to getting caught up on the newer eps that have aired!
