Shannon K. Butcher's debut novel, No Regrets, is a swift and pleasant jaunt through romantic suspense land. Nothing terribly surprising; there are a lot of familiar tropes here, and they get handled in a lot of familiar ways. Cryptologist Noelle Blanche must be protected from terrorists out to kidnap her, and ex-military operative David Wolfe steps up to the plate to take on the job. Chemistry springs up between the two while bullets start flying, and Noelle must make a call between standing firm on her ideals and risking getting innocent people killed, while David must put the ghost of his lost wife to rest.
The story was less substantial than I would have liked--I'm used to the likes of Elizabeth Lowell and Tami Hoag, who fill in quite a bit more detail on their storylines. But even if it's a bit on the thin side, the bones of the plot are good, and I'll look forward to seeing Butcher's writing develop. Three stars.
