BSG 3.12: "Rapture"
Jan. 22nd, 2007 07:32 pmOnce more into the breach with a lot of things going splody, startling developments amongst the Cylons, an impressive little act of sacrifice, and enough love-quadrangle wangst to fill a base star!
I finally got caught up on "Unfinished Business" earlier yesterday afternoon, before "Rapture" came on--and it turned out that that was quite the appropriate episode to watch to get ramped up for the new episode. Because damn.
Okay, so this whole Lee-Dee-Kara-Sam quadrangle thing. Half of me is all over this, because the involved parties are certainly playing it well, and half of me wants to smack Starbuck silly. (Especially now that I've seen what happened with her and Lee on New Caprica--that scene where Lee was bellowing out "I AM LEE ADAMA AND I LOVE KARA THRACE!" was quite charming, and then she turned right around and went and married Sam? Jumping gods on pogo sticks, Kara, what's wrong with you?) As I was gushing last season, I'm all about the Lee/Kara shipping, but it bugs me that they've gotten around to dealing with it more on camera only after Lee married Dee and Kara married Sam. It ain't like Kara's ever been short of reasons to angst, and to slather "I only married Sam because I was scared of being in love with Lee" (which is what I'm presuming is going on here) on top of the rest of her angst feels forced and annoying.
That said, I'm absolutely sympathizing with Dee and Sam both being increasingly pissed off about what's going on between their spouses, and I'm halfway hoping they'll both just go "fuck it" and hook up with each other, since they are definitely the more grounded individuals in each pair. ;) But we've already gotten a hint of what's to come in the teaser for the next episode--Sam going all Noble Boy and trying to make Kara go to Lee if that's who she really loves. Kara looked like she was on this concept, and I noted that she was challenging Lee on whether he'd leave Dee, too. This being BSG, I can't imagine that it'll be as easy as Kara finally deciding what she wants to be happy for once in her life. I'm more expecting Lee's going to waffle hardcore on the matter, and either Dee or Sam or maybe even both of them are going to get killed.
I do at least like that there was a minimum amount of snark and angst between Dee and Kara as Dee rescued her. She didn't say a damned word about what was going on between them all, though every line of her body radiated how pissed off she was. I have to admit that this actually makes me respect Dee a bit more as a character, because it shows how much of a pro she is that she didn't waste time in useless sniping as she got Starbuck to safety. But oh my yes, there's going to be hell to pay for this later.
I also liked how Sam insisted to Lee that if Kara died, he'd kill him--and Lee's hollow answer that if she died, he'd let him.
Meanwhile, over in the Land of Closest Thing To A Happily Married Couple on Galactica, that scene with Sharon begging Helo to shoot her? CRIPES. That there was some powerful, riveting stuff. Helo having such a hard time with the notion of shooting his own wife, her unwavering insistence that this was going to be the only way she could get to little Hera, and the look on poor Helo's face when he shot her... yeep. Add to this the excellent followup scene with Helo, Adama, and Roslin, the highlight of which was Roslin challenging Helo about whether he realized that he'd put the entire Fleet in jeopardy--and his rejoinder that they wouldn't be there in the first place if she hadn't stolen the kid to begin with. Inarguable point there--and Roslin had the wisdom to not even try to argue that. Well played all around.
Raise your hand if you went "AUGH" that they didn't show us the faces of any of the Final Five. At all. AUGH AUGH AUGH. But of course they wouldn't drop any fascinating little data like that mid-season--that's season-finale-level stuff. Kudos to Lucy Lawless for that absolute look of rapturous joy on her face as she got what she wanted, even as it killed her. The blood streaming out of her nose as she keeled over was an especially nice touch. And then when she woke up in the resurrection tank back on the ship, and was told that her entire model was getting boxed? YOW. Even then she had this look of glowing serenity and contentment on her face. Almost makes me sorry for the Threes. I'd say so long Lucy and nice to have had you around, except I strongly suspect that like unto the Universe of Joss Whedon, in Battlestar Galactica, death does not release you. ;) I bet we'll see D'Anna showing up again in the occasional dream sequence or flashback.
Very, very interesting little thing there with Helo comparing Starbuck's little painted design with the depiction of the Eye of Jupiter, innit?
solarbird has quite the intriguing little theory about what this means about Starbuck, and it will be very fun to see if she's right.
Speaking of the Eye of Jupiter, I was pleased to note that I called it being the nova. Go me!
Last but not least, how about that little clash between Sharon and Boomer over the baby--and Caprica!Six helping Sharon escape back to Galactica? Yee! I called it a beat before Caprica came off the raptor, too. Muaha! And between that and Baltar too being taken into custody, things are going to get very interesting over the next several episodes. Now the Fleet has the two primary instigators of the holocaust that hit the Colonies in their hands. This is going to be very, very interesting indeed.

Date: 2007-01-23 03:19 pm (UTC)Seconded.
Date: 2007-01-24 08:06 pm (UTC)Dee did make one snarky little comment "My HUSBAND ordered me out here to save YOUR ass." (or something similar, with those emphases.)
To be honest? Screw monogamy, people, just get with the foursome already. *nodnod*
Re: Seconded.
Date: 2007-01-24 08:14 pm (UTC)And, *laughs!* Yeah, the OT4 possibility did cross the mind, though I'm sure we won't be seeing THAT no matter how edgy a show BSG calls itself. >:)
Re: Seconded.
Date: 2007-01-24 09:15 pm (UTC)Bring on next week. Monday is my TV day, since that's when I can obtain BSG and when Heroes is actually aired on a channel I can watch.
(I get three TV channels; NTV, CBC, and Radio-Canada, which is French CBC. The picture quality on the last two is unwatchable.)
Re: Seconded.
Date: 2007-01-24 10:33 pm (UTC)Oof about the bad picture quality, that sucks. But I'm glad to hear you have a means of getting both of those shows! (One of these days I may get caught up on Heroes since everybody seems to love it so, but I have barely enough time to manage the shows I'm watching now. ;) )

Date: 2007-01-26 08:39 pm (UTC)I like Dara's theory a lot better--to wit, that Hera is not actually the first human/Cylon hybrid. ;)
