Hunkering down for the weather

I have to tell y'all, after seeing all the news reports flying around this morning about the shiny new iPhone, I am totally wanting to check one of these devices out. I have long lamented, as y'all may recall, the fact that I have to carry around three different devices to accomplish all the mobile tasks I want to do. This gadget looks like it would at least combine two of those devices. In the Ideal World of Anna, I'd be able to write on this device too, and that would totally, totally rule. But I couldn't really justify buying one of those things immediately when it comes out, I think, since I only just got my new 30-gig iPod this past summer and it's still quite spiffy. Maybe when I actually get around to upgrading to a Mac laptop and I'll need a mobile device to play with it, that will be the time to get one. We'll have to see!

Courtesy of mizkit, I hear with great amusement that jimbutcher has gotten to film some footage of himself as an extra on the shiny new Dresden Files TV show, due to air on the 21st. This makes my little fangirl heart so very, very happy. ^_^

I am as of this writing hunkered down at home standing by on the VPN for tonight's round of work-stuff, waiting to get the go-ahead for the tasks I have to do. Till then I will be eying the weather. We're not due to actually get snow until dark-thirty in the morning, but hey, I'm probably going to be up that late anyway!

I will have to have my diet Mountain Dew standing by. And both of the Great Big DVDs, because I'm thinkin' I'll be needing perky Newfoundlanders to keep me awake. And in honor of mamishka, I have put on my Zim shirt, because I figure "YOU SPEAK CRAZINESS" is an apt motto for any evening when I get to stay up until anywhere between 2 and 4am to ship a project!

Apparently, the iPhone will actually be running MacOS X. People are talking about installing Apache on it. It ought to be possible to get some sort of writing app on it, or a terminal window that'll give you emacs or vi. And Bluetooth will hook you up to one of those folding PDA keyboards.

Ah, but you see, here's the thing--I don't want to have to carry around an extra keyboard either. I just want to carry the one device. If a keyboard app on a suitably clever touch-sensitive screen comes into existence, that would suit me just dandy. That'll be the part I'll want to play with.

And I saw the reports that said it's running actual OSX, yeah. The interesting part for me there would be how to actually access things like a terminal window for vi or what have you. Because that? That would be COOL.

The website suggests that it does have keyboard capability. So. Shiny.

I saw one of the screenshots in the little interactive demo thingie that showed how you could bring up a teeny keyboard to do things like composing mail, yeah. :D If that is also doable for a text editor of some sort... so very, very shiny. Ooooo....
