It's raining cats and dogs and wildebeest and guinea pigs and more dogs and more cats in Seattle, but by gods, I have my copy of Courage & Patience & Grit, and lo, there are pretty Newfoundlanders with instruments on my TV screen and they are singing!

So far my favorite exchange is this one, just after "Billy Peddle" in which Bob totally kicks ass:

Alan: "How do other bands do it? The ones that don't have Bob in them, I mean? They must suck."
Séan: "Those poor Bobless bands!"

Y'all pardon me, I'll be the wibbly pile of hormones over in the corner here. And OH my the prettiness of Séan in the intro to "I'm a Rover"! ;) I feel some icon making coming on this weekend, too!

ETA: Whee, the intros on both "I'm a Rover" and "The Mermaid"! Wonderful Séan lines there, you Shantyfen out there.

ETA #2: OMG the Mermaid Dance! Bwahahahahaha! This is the first time I've seen it! >:)

ETA #3: Another fabulous Séan quote, just after "The Mermaid": "Fish! Not just for Fridays anymore! Some people have fish three or four times a week--and if you're from Newfoundland, that number can soar to eighteen."

ETA #4: "River Driver"! *THUD* Oh my, the deep rumbly voice of Murray. And oh the lingering camera shots on Alan! Ahem. Er. Sorry folks, estrogen's getting a little thick in here. ;)

ETA #5: Some fabulous bits in "Scolding Wife"--a great little icon opportunity with Murray and Kris, and Séan bellowing "She caught me by the mermaid and threw me NAKED ACROSS THE FLOOR!" And oh FINALLY, the audience is on its feet. 'Bout time!

ETA #6: Check out Bob on the banjo for "Old Polina"! Bitchin'!

And for Act II:

ETA #7: Ah, Alan loses the jacket at last! Mmm, nice black shirt. ^_^

ETA #8: Hrmm, I wonder if this is from the other show? I'm not sure if Murray and Bob are wearing different shirts. I'll have to doublecheck.

ETA #9: And so far I'm approving of the camera being a lot closer on the stage than it was for the Great Big DVD. ;) Lots of loverly icon opportunities for the closeups of Alan with his mike. Those of you with screencapping capability at the ready, keep an eye out for those!

ETA #10: Is this the fastest I've ever heard 'em do "When I'm Up"? Quite perky on the tempo there! And as per usual, he milks the hell out of the ending of that ditty. ;)

ETA #11: Bwahahaha! "As long as the bottle was passed around, Kris and Murray were feeling gay! But that's okay, 'cause we're Canadian." And oh hey, this song is where one of those screencaps they had posted on the GBS promo page came from. Woot! And hee, check out the expressions on Séan's face while he's belting this one out. He looks almost scary. ;)

ETA #12: Hee, another good Séan line: "How we doing so far? Wanna edit anything out?" And OH WOW there's "Danny Boy"--something I've actually never heard Séan sing before. NICE. I'm sad this one's not on the CD, though!

ETA #13: "General Taylor"! *BEAM* And oh yeah, the harmony! *THUD* Are they going to do that thunderous chord at the end with Murray and the floor-shattering low note? Yay for this take being closer back to the rhythm of the original studio take, too! YAY for the extra Pint of Rum verse, too! ;) Plenty of icon mileage in this for Séan icons, too. And OH GOD that chord on that last "stormy"... here it comes, the last one... here it comes... YES! *THUD*

And LOL! Alan: "Séan sings really good in his living room, by the way."
Séan: "And in the bathtub!"
Alan: "I've been there!" And more there, too. *laughs and laughs and laughs*

ETA #14: Nice icon moment for Alan too with a "YES!" gesture, as he's introducing "Sea of No Cares". ^_^ And a great intro there, too. I didn't know it was all about Newfoundland being a place "where you can leave your cares behind." Hee, too, for: "Close your eyes and imagine you're in Séan's living room on a foggy Wednesday." .... and OMG, it's the slow version. NICE! :D Ooh, Séan's taking a verse. Check out the high notes on Séan! And pretty pretty icon mileage all over this one too.

The camera keeps going to a girl in the audience, repeatedly, during this song. Is that a random fangirl, or is that actually one of the B'ys' own lasses?

ETA #15: LOL! Very enthusiastic person bellowing out "FARE THEE WELL!" during the intro for "Helmethead". And hee to Séan immediately piping, "Gimme some of that!" Yay for Bob singing!

ETA #16: Icon moment in "Consequence Free": Alan crossing himself while singing the line about feeling guilty all the time. And ooh, check the backup lines Séan's singing on top of those verses. I don't think I've noticed him doing those at recent shows.

ETA #17: Wow, by "Mari Mac" Séan's looking all sweaty. I suspect [livejournal.com profile] raise_a_jar and [livejournal.com profile] silme711 will approve. >:) Waiting for the tempo to pick up any second now--AH there we go! Blazing! Wow, check Alan and Séan's hands both on their guitars. I'm STILL surprised they can do that without snapping every single string on their instruments!

ETA #18: "Ordinary Day"! *sighs happily* Always love this one. ALWAYS. Lovely mix on the bodhran there, I can hear it thudding away, and YAY there goes the audience with the vertical movement!

"Ain't no drums like Nova Scotia drums!" Hee, Alan re-tools an old line for a new band member. ;) Sniff. I still miss Darrell, though!

HEE. The parrot is squawking like mad in the other room while this ditty is playing (Zoe's own version of Vertical Movement) and OMG the pretty shot of Alan as he sings "in this beautiful life there's always some sorrow". Icon moment!

ETA #19: Encore time! There go the waves of "GREAT! BIG! SEA!" all over the audience... and somebody's got a Newfoundland flag! Yay! And whoops, here come the B'ys back! With "Excursion"! OOH, check the BIG Newfoundland flag in the audience! Woot!

And ooh, key changes on the last verse and choruses. I THINK this is on purpose, but sometimes I can't tell with Alan. ;) HEY!

ETA #20: LAST CHANCE TO DANCE with "Fortune"! GODS, I still love this one, and I think it may be their best concert instrumental. The latter part, after the vocal interlude, is always fabulous on stage! And check Séan on the bodhran and the jigging! Fast icon moments there!

ETA #21: Here we go. I've been waiting for this one through the whole DVD. Second round of the Chant--and the B'ys come back. Appreciative hush falls over the crowd as they shush everyone. YES! "Old Brown's Daughter". Unmiked. LOVELY. Look at those B'ys all in a row singing their hearts out! ^_^ Hee, everybody looks at ease except Bob. I think maybe Bob might miss having an instrument! Oooh, too, more Murray bass! Oh. My. Gods. The harmony on that last long chord! *THUD*

*big happy sigh* DAMN, I love these guys. But now I am NOT going to watch the extras that come with the disc, on the grounds that I've got to try to write some words tonight, preferably some that aren't "Alan is so pretty Alan is so pretty Alan is so pretty" over and over and over again. ;)

That. Was. Excellent. :D Felt like I was watching it with you!

I'll be pacing the floors here today until my copy shows up. According to the tracking info, it's here in town and out for delivery. (I also finally bought SoNC, but don't tell anyone...lol) And I'll be sure to watch for Mari-Mac ;)

Of course, my copy couldn't come yesterday when I had more time to watch it...no, it has to come today, when I have a dozen or so people coming over for dinner tomorrow and a house that needs severe help :D Oh, well...if it doesn't all get cleaned, at least I have what I think is a good excuse: Sorry, all...there were pretty Newfoundlanders on my tv that I had to watch!

That counts as a good excuse, right? ;)

"Oh, well, I got a Great Big Sea DVD, y'see, and hell, Thanksgiving was LAST MONTH in Canada!" ;)

Precisely! :D (actually, the bloody bird pulled a fast one on me this year and was done THREE HOURS EARLY! Oy!)

I did manage to both watch the DVD and get the house cleaned on Wednesday...just barely, but it worked out. Yummy B'ys! I'll have to squee more in an actual post later on.

Actually, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] seimaisin the only songs on SoNC I hadn't heard were Yarmouth Town and Own True Way. The others were on the CD she gave me to introduce me to the B'ys. Have to admit, I listened to the words of Yarmouth Town and the fact that Sean was singing it and just had to giggle. Typical for the lad, eh? ;)

Watched my roommate's copy. Am thrilled that they talk about MY part of Newfoundland (That is, the part that's not all rocky shores and cliffs and Atlantic, but more island-spotted bays, wild rivers, and mountains like forested cathedrals). Look! A non-St. John's Newfoundland city! Yay!

(Seriously. St. John's has a better and more varied live music scene, but for looking out a window every day, it's Corner Brook, hands down. When you and Solarbird finally make it out here, you are under strict orders to come visit the West.)
