Things are looking up

For those of you who haven't already seen this news over on kathrynt or mamishka's journals, finally, finally, that damned breathing tube is out of solarbird. They took it out of her around 1:30 this afternoon, turned off her sedation and pretty much all of her meds, and put her on a 50-percent oxygen mix to help her lungs along. spazzkat, risu, and I were all with her this afternoon, and she came close to waking up quite a few times, though she's really still kind of a different plane from the rest of us. It'll be another day or two before she's fully back with us.

But at least, finally, this hurdle has been cleared. She'll be in the ICU for a few more days yet as well, so I'm still hitting the hospital for the day shift, but we'll see if this situation changes maybe later this week.

mamishka brought us teriyaki tonight, and auntmonkey will be checking in tomorrow with a dinner contribution. And to all the Norwescon folks now looking in on my journal, hiya, and I'm already telling Dara that you're asking after her. Keep the good wishes coming, everyone!

given what i've read and heard from various hockey and Canadian football players with mild concussions, my money's on "WTF happened??!?" - I'll be *astonished* if Dara remembers anything between kissing Anna goodbye to go for a bike ride (i.e. some hours before the accident) and waking up in ICU.

She says she still doesn't remember what happened, but now she's started piecing together a timeline for the days she's missed. She's working on reconstructing it. And she's not yet committed to the "gears locked up" theory; she wants to see the bike.

But heh, she does remember being in Mexico. ;)

Anna has been doing way, way, WAY better this past week, starting at "incoherent with joy" when Dara woke up. kathrynt said that when I called her with the news I was quite literally talking so loudly and so quickly into the phone that she couldn't understand what I was saying, and my cellphone speaker was clipping. ;)

And yeah, it was really wonderful of them. I'll be thinking of that every single time I hear those songs for quite some time! :) Especially now that I know I can go to the forthcoming show at Bumbershoot with a clear and easy heart!

Having that happen was so much of an improvement. :D We have a bit longer yet in the hospital, and we're not sure yet what's going on with moving her to a PT place, but now it's really almost a "let's just hang out" thing, which is SO MUCH BETTER.

I told Dara again about the sparklers today, now that she's awake and aware enough for memory to stick. It got me a very warm smile. :D

*hugs back!* It's helping, yeah! Though right now the big challenge is her shoulder giving her issues, so she's on a fleet of painkillers right now. Assuming we can get that cleared up, she's being told that she's making a lot of progress in an amazingly short amount of time, so she's hoping she'll be able to attend her fall quarter classes at the end of September.

*laughs merrily!* It wasn't quite as pungent as I expected--the swearing was more when she was still only half-coherent--and now we're mostly just to "bored bored bored bored bored". ;)
