Sunburned Anna
Jul. 17th, 2006 12:58 pmYesterday
mamishka came over to hang out, which was very fun! We all went down to the Sunday market in Lake Forest Park, where we got the usual assortment of tasty market goods. Then, since Meems hadn't been through Log Boom Park yet, we walked back to MurkNorth via the Burke-Gilman trail and hung out by the lake for a while. We spotted several big birds, most likely eagles, flying in low over the water--we're pretty sure they were fishing. And we also saw a bunch of ducks, including two baby ducks, and OMG THE CUTENESS. Especially when one of them cheeped I'd never seen a real baby duck before or heard one cheep! And After that we hung out at the Murk and watched the first two episodes of the new season of The Dead Zone, finally. Fifth season gets off to a bit of a shaky start, but it's still pretty watchable. We'll see how it holds up through the forthcoming episodes.
As a result of that little frolic out into the sunshine, though, I am totally sunburned. I was silly enough to go out wearing a tank top and no sunscreen, and so I'm not only sunburned, I've got weird tan lines to show for it. It doesn't hurt--but I do feel it. It helped that
solarbird smeared fresh aloe off her plant in our bathroom over my pink bits, though. That was unbelievably refreshing; fresh aloe is indeed incredible stuff. Dara's making me put it on my surgery scar on my throat, too, to see what that does. Dara, Meems, and
spazzkat all claimed that it's already doing something, though I haven't really been able to tell yet past wondering if it's starting to change color. And that might just be because of summer sun exposure.
No sign yet of either of the manuscript acknowledgement postcards I included with the partials that went to Bantam; we'll see if either or both of those show up this week. Happily, I have plenty to work on in the meantime to keep me distracted--and although the lion's share of my writing attention still has to go to Queen of Souls, I am totally in the mood for the Shenner book right now thanks to re-reading all of my and Meems' old Paul and Shen logs. The oldest of which, I might add, are nearly ten years old. Yoiks. :)
And I am also totally in an Elvis mood, thanks to those pretty, pretty icons. Damn. I've missed him. That got fed by reading all the times I had Shen do (mutated) versions of Elvis songs in the logs, too! :)
Thursday miles: 4.2
Friday miles: 3.4
Saturday miles: 2.75
Sunday miles: 2.75
Miles out of Hobbiton: 1225.2
Miles out of Rivendell: 767.2
Miles out of Lothlórien: 305.2
Miles to Rauros Falls: 83.8

Date: 2006-07-17 10:44 pm (UTC)Just a quick note to say hi to you and apologize for not having posted on my LJ these last few weeks. RL kind of bit me in the behind and I'm playing a desperate game of catch-up, especially on my off days. At least come my next off days I'll have an evening at the opera, which should be enjoyable as I'm going up to Cincy for the night.
Will try to post soon to at least get back on track.
Take care now. Oh! Did I mention I got the first book in Novik's series? I haven't started it yet as I have a few other books ahead of it, but I think it'll be next on my list! :-) I can't wait! (I've also made her a Friend here on my LJ so I can keep track of her).

And yay that you got the first of the Novik books! :D

Date: 2006-07-23 09:07 pm (UTC)I'll give them credit for one thing: they do like a challenge in Cincy and they manage to snag some big stars on top of it. I saw Denyce Graves in Aida a couple of years back; James Morris was supposed to sing in Tales of Hoffmann Thursday night but had knee surgery and had to be replaced (by someone quite good but *sigh* I've only seen Morris sing live twice before). With stars like that, the expensive tickets for a Midwest city makes sense.
I was just glad I was in the fifth row/seat 4....I could see everything!

Date: 2006-07-24 11:33 pm (UTC)I think one joke/controversy/one of those things you mention to get people stirred up *bg* about the Ring Cycle is how much of it got borrowed by George Lucas (or even Tolkien).
You have magic/evil rings (or a ring) in Wagner and Tolkien. Said magic ring/rings turn people into obsessed murdering maniacs for the most part.
Luke and Leia are twins separated at birth who later find each other, and their father was one of the greatest Jedi but turned bad.
Siegmund and Sieglinde are twins separated at birth who later find each other, and their father is the king of the gods and has loads of family problems. Plus that, at least Darth Vader never owed some nasty giants money after they built his fabulous palace, Valhalla (not sure Darth ever had a fabulous palace LOL).
Thankfully -- unlike Siegmund and Sieglinde -- Luke and Leia don't end up rolling around on the stage at some point in Return of the Jedi as they make love! Although they know they're siblings! They don't commit incest like Siegmund and Sieglinde, and Leia doesn't get pregnant by her brother and give birth to the hero that knows no fear: Siegfried. (Explain that to the kiddies SW fans LOL)
Oh and as far as I know, no heroes in Star Wars fall in love with their aunt who was punished by being put in a deep sleep for a number of years for protecting her half-sister and half-brother (Siegmund and Sieglinde) from the wrath of their God-Father!
Anyway, Wagner equals VERY LONG LOL I don't know if the man ever did anything small. I'm not a huge fan of his (I prefer Puccini myself), but I do like Tannhauser and a couple of the Ring operas, only because I've never fallen asleep to them. Parsifal I tried to listen to once on Live from the Met...and was sleep by the time the overture was over! LOL

Date: 2006-07-18 10:04 pm (UTC)Weirdly enough, both when I heard the news that Elvis had died and, two years later, when I heard that John Wayne had died, I was driving my 68 Rambler American -- my first car... *sigh* -- on I5, a few miles before Salem, OR.
Part of me misses both of them, each in their own fashion.
