Dell laptop EXPLODES at Japanese conference

This is too good to not post about, and the subject line says it all: a Dell laptop exploded at a Japanese conference. Go look! There are pictures, and they are stunning. I mean, damn.

I hope the poor schmoe whose laptop that was can get another one without too much hassle, and I hope to GODS he had backed up his data. And if it was still on warranty, I feel for whatever poor schmoe had to take the phone call at Dell. How would you like to be the person getting an angry phone call saying, "The laptop you sent me EXPLODED!", huh?

I think I'll be going home and backing up all my data and telling my Dell laptop how much I love it and beg it not to ever explode.

I definitely feel a backup coming on when I get home tonight, yeah! I mean, my Fujitsu Lifebook runs a little warm sometimes when it's doing heavy accessing of the hard disk--but it hasn't exploded yet!

Tonight I am going to go home and have me a nice long conversation with Newstar, my Fujitsu, about how we're going to make a current backup of our data, oh my yes.

I particularly like that picture in the middle with the incandescent, roiling mass of fire and smoke where the laptop used to be. O.O

I usually only manage to remember to do a backup when something actively reminds me to do one. Like, oh, say, word of SOMEBODY'S LAPTOP EXPLODING.

But at least I have done one within the last couple of months, so I'd only lose SOME of my writing work if a meteor fell on my computer!

My computer backs up only every morning automatically at 7:00 AM (I should probably change it to 6:00, though, because sometimes I don't turn it on before 7:00). I have a happy programme that does everything for me!

I'd do something like that if I left my laptop on all day, but I don't. I keep it closed and in hibernation when I'm not using it.

Our murkworks.net servers, though, they get automagically backed up every Sunday, but I still need to get those files manually copied down onto our USB backup drive.

Oh yeah, I keep mine off pretty much all the time that I'm not using it, but I do open it every morning to check my e-mail and whatnot, and that's almost always at the same time every day, so it backs up then. If I don't get around to opening it until later, like on a Saturday, then it just backs up as soon as it is opened.

Hee hee, that's awesome! I think if my laptop exploded, I'd . . . well I'd be very sad, but at the same time, it would still be awesome, after I recovered from shock (my important stuff is backed up online anyway).

I use a Mac, but they still get pretty hot, and it sounds like it was a battery problem -- something that can happen on any sort of laptop.

spazzkat was betting on a battery problem, yeah. Though I'm curious... my friend kathrynt was telling us last time we went out to dinner with her about how, when she was making house calls for Dell support, she actually found this one guy's laptop that had a piece of liner over its motherboard. Liner that was, I might add, labelled with something to the effect of "remove before assembly". This was causing the guy's laptop to get painfully hot and generally behave badly, and it was a miracle that the CPU hadn't fried yet.

I really wonder if something similar had happened with this computer.

Yeah, my bet is on battery, too. I read that some time ago Apple found that some laptops didn't have some sort of cover by or on a batter removed before they were shipped out; it could have been something like that.

I can't believe the person who told readers not to try and put the fire out "just pack up your stuff and leave" because fire extinguisher powder will get your suit dirty.
