Checking in up on the From the Road page up on greatbigsea.com, I see that the B'ys have reached D.C. And in his usual inimitable fashion, The Doyle has remarks to make about this:

"We blew a tire this morning which caused a two hour delay and a trip to a repair yard. No chance for a stroll around the Whitehouse today. Bush will have to come to me I suppose."

And, further down:

"Just got stopped by the cops. In the new security addicted world, it appears you are not allowed to tow a trailer in front of the Whitehouse. I hope we are not about to be searched in a most personal way. Our big blue and green bus, decorated with Newfoundland Tourism pictures of whales and icebergs is apparently a potential threat to National safety. I am the face of evil."

Who knew Evil was a bouzouki player from Newfoundland?

Speaking of which province, special notice to the GBS fans on my Friends list: if you haven't registered for the Great Big Vacation drawing yet, better get on the stick, 'cause the contest closes on the 15th!

It's the hair, I tell you. Confuses people, makes them look like criminals. Or something. And anyway, you have to watch out for those tour busses. they can be real creepy things!

I would love to register for great big vacation. I'm from newfoundland and would love to be able to go back but curse loto-quebec they make it impossible to run contests here.

Did I mention I hate my province? No? Well I'm doing it now.

Alan has on prior FTR posts been known to describe the denizens of the Great Big Tour Bus as "long-haired freaky people", indeed!

Bummer about Quebec forbidding contest entries, though. I noticed that Quebec was excluded when they were running the Kitchen Party of Your Dreams contest, as well. :(

INDEED!

Yeah it's because Loto-Quebec wants their cut of every contest that comes in here, so we get excluded from pretty much all of them. Which really kind of sucks for the 25 province-wide ex-patriate Newfoundlanders.

I take solace in knowing, at least, that the Doyle and I are from the same town and will be chearing the same hockey team tonight. Solemn nod.

Educate me? What is Loto-Quebec? (And I was wondering what was going on with the contest exclusions there... guh. How vexing.)

Hee. I am a hockey heathen, I fear, but I did like the one game I attended for free once--the Seattle Thunderbirds vs. the Portland Winterhawks. But solarbird played hockey in school, and I was able to follow that game well enough that I had at least a passable idea of what was going on. It helped that the pace of a hockey game seems very similar to me to the pace of a basketball game. As a native Kentuckian, I grew up around a lot of basketball. ^_^

Also, any game where the audience members show their appreciation by throwing fish out onto the ice just had to make me grin on general principle.

WHL hockey. Good hockey , I'm a sucker for major-junior but with my boys out well, you know I just don't have the same enthusiasm. I hold out hope for the Habs tonight, mind,only a faint one.

Hockey's a lot of fun, I highly reccommend it!

Loto quebec is the government organisation that governs all games of chance, including sweepstakes, contests, lotteries, etc. in the province. they charge outrageous fees to get the contest going in the province and therefore most of the time people don't bother. I'm not up on all the current details but suffice it to say that it's too expensive to include quebec unless you think quebecers will enter in droves.

I think I have the same issue following most sports as I do with most TV--I just don't have the time, since right now all my free time gets sucked up by writing books. But perhaps someday I will get to see more hockey. :)
