gamera_spinning has a double-barrel shotgun blast of Star Trek-related amusement on his LJ today. Here we have one hell of a Photoshop job. Fair warning, if you're also a Star Wars fan, you may find yourself going "aaaaaaaah!" ;) Me, I am simultaneously amused and appalled. And kind of grinning, because I can vaguely sort of see that in some mutant alternate crossover universe, what's in that picture might actually happen. I am way, way more appalled by this word of the next Trek flick.

In other news, I must also bring you this kitten pile pic courtesy of cuteoverload.

I've picked up Click Here For Murder by donna_andrews and Pride and Prescience by Carrie Bebris (despite the huge fluffiness of Suspense and Suspensibility, I did actually kind of enjoy it, so I wanted to go back and read the first one). But I'm not reading any new paperbacks till I finish my sweep through lyonesse's book, which I hope to finish up some time this weekend. Once I do that, though, naominovik's Throne of Jade is probably going to shove aside all other contenders. Because it's coming out Very Soon, and after the joyful squee of His Majesty's Dragon (which included a preview chapter for Throne of Jade), I have got to have the next book. :D

(The writer in me wonders if Novik wrote all three of her series' books back to back, since Del Rey is plunking them out very close together... HMD came out at the tail end of March, we're getting ToJ very soon now, and the third one, Black Powder War, is due out at the end of May!)

Lastly, rumor has it I may be working this weekend. Oh joy oh glee! But the good parts of this are that the busses that get me downtown during the week do run on pretty much the same schedule on Saturday, so I can still get down here without having to drive. Also, overtime utterly Fails to Suck. (Though I did also mention to my lead that my weekends are my biggest writing time, so I would prefer to give him either Saturday or Sunday, but not both. We'll see what happens on Saturday and whether Sunday is also required.)

Huh, the TypePad page loads for me okay, weird... I was linking directly to the post on the actual blog. Glad you could see it with the other link, anyway!

I think I'd like the concept of a young Kirk and Spock flick a lot more if I trusted the folks making the flicks to actually deliver a good story. Enterprise was very erratic, and I didn't even bother with the last several Trek flicks since the reviews of them were NOT good.

Also, trying to go back and fill in stuff from the early lives of Kirk and Spock annoys me on two levels--one, if the summary on the page I linked to was correct, it's putting them at Starfleet Academy at the same time, and from everything I've understood up to this point, they just were NOT at the Academy together and did not meet until Kirk took command of the Enterprise. So rewriting the canon that way would annoy me. Two, the whole thing smacks of a feeling of "ohmigod, nobody's coming to see the Trek flicks anymore, what can we do? Um, um, um, young Kirk and Spock! Yeah, that's it!" Which also bugs me.

(Though, I must append to my previous comment that as I consider the issue of Kirk and Spock at Starfleet Academy, I'm trying to remember whether I have any real basis for bitching about that if I go strictly by what's in the TOS episodes and the TOS-related movies. I'm primarily drawing upon my recollection of Vonda McIntyre's excellent TOS novel Enterprise: The First Adventure for my assertions re: Kirk and Spock's first meeting, and I suppose that a novel arguably does not count for True Canon for Trek purposes.)

Hee! I must admit, yeah, young Kirk? Totally smoochable and scoundrelicious. Though clearly in that mutant alternate universe where he smooches Leia, there is no Han, because if I had to pick between Kirk and Solo, Solo wins hands down. ;)

Kirk, I must further note, is way more swoonable in the earliest TOS episodes than he was in the later ones, but I do have a special fondness in my heart for him as he is the first character who ever taught me that hazel eyes can in fact be swoonable. And back when he still had a trim figure, back in the earliest TOS days when they still were willing to show him shirtless, yeah, that was nice. ;)

But between James T. Kirk and Han Solo? NO CONTEST. NONE.

I'll have to see what happens about the weekend... even if I work, I should still be able to write some, just not as much as I'd like. I'd be on my weeknight writing schedule rather than my weekend one.

I liked that picture, had me laughing out loud :) As for movie... eh, it can't possibly be worse than Nemesis. (Which bizarrely is the one Trek movie I actually own, since I missed it in the cinema. I think I forced myself to watch all of thirty minutes of it before giving up. Siiiiigh.)

From what gamera_spinning was telling me, yeah, Nemesis was pretty godawful. I'm glad I missed it! But it's exactly that point that makes me think that Trek really needs some significant time off. 'Cause right now I can't think that an attempt to make an 11th flick with young Kirk and Spock is anything but a desperate attempt to revive a franchise that has heavily sucked for the last several films.

Trying to put Shatner and Nimoy into Starfleet-Academy-era versions of their characters would be extremely stupid, and I'd like to hope that if they're actually going to make this movie, they would bend over backwards to find reasonable unknowns of the proper age to do it. It could be done--I mean, part of me would also assert that casting a young actor to play the role of Indiana Jones would also be stupid, except they did just that with Sean Patrick Flanery in the Young Indiana Jones TV series, and he did a splendid job channeling Mr. Ford. Similarly, though I mostly greatly dislike the newer Star Wars trilogy, I have to give Ewan MacGregor props for channeling Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan.

But part of me is also with you, and that it just would not feel right to have somebody besides Shatner and Nimoy playing Kirk and Spock.

K, first... my sweetie has all the Enterprise episodes and while they're certainly not 100% groovy 100% of the time, we like them. (Hot Vulcan babe... yum! Hot Vulcan babe in her skivvies? Be still my fluttering... errr... something or other.)

Second, my reaction to that kitten pic is enough to totally embarrass any residual macho I may own. Thanks!

Lastly... "scoundrelicious". Dang, I think I love you! :-)

Hey, I'm not saying I disliked Enterprise, necessarily; there are some of the earliest episodes I actually liked a lot. :) And I do like Captain Archer. But as solarbird and I continued to watch, we got less interested; the storylines seemed very erratic in quality and we finally bailed completely somewhere into third season.
