Okay, for the record? I'm an agnostic and a liberal and I have my share of issues with Christianity, but the thing with the Afghan man who's in danger of being executed because he jumped ship on Islam and converted to Christianity? That's officially Not Right. Nobody should ever be in danger of DEATH because of converting from religion A to religion B, no matter what the involved religions are. Nobody should ever be threatened with loss of life because of having a belief system that goes against the majority. (How this ties in with my feelings about how other rights should never be threatened because of oh, say, for example, sexual orientation, I leave as an exercise for the reader.)

Meanwhile, since this ties in with my recent Superman kick, word from boingboing.net is that Marvel and DC recently re-filed a joint trademark on the word 'Super-Hero'. Which is vexing. Relatedly, here is a FAQ that someone compiled about what exactly this means. Interesting reading, and there are extensive comments on that post. Still, I'm vexed!

Today I leave work early to swing over to the Polyclinic and have my thyroid levels checked again, since I need to have another checkup with my endoc next week. Time to see whether I get to stay at 150mcg for a while, or whether the dosage has to be tweaked again. I'm suspecting I may stay at this dosage; there may be a tiny bit of wiggle room at this point, but my gut feeling is, not enough to send me up another 25mcg to the next highest dosage. We'll see what happens there.

I STILL haven't seen Gladiator yet, but I think it is next on my Netflix list! I always think of Pride and Prejudice Mrs. Bennet going on and on "this is all so vexing!"

Gladiator is the movie that made me a Crowe fan. So although it has slipped on my list of favorite Russell movies down below Master and Commander, I still have a special fondness for it. :)

And hee! Yeah, I'd forgotten about Mrs. Bennett saying that in P&P. I haven't read that in a while, nor have I seen the wonderful A&E adaptation for a while. (I need that on DVD, too!)

Master and Commander is a great movie. I LOVE tall ships though. I'm kind of addicted to them, so movies that have them make me really happy!

Yes, I need to have a P&P day sometime soon. Colin Firth. Mmm. Ahem. Yes. It's definitely worth purchasing the DVD. I finally bought it this past summer! I did read it last fall though. I should read her other books, so far I've only read P&P and Emma.

I love, love, love me some M&C, and I'm there with the neatness of the whole Tall Sailing Ships thing, but most of all? I just love me some Jack and Stephen whipping out their instruments in the middle of a story and having at it. Once I rack up a few more extra bucks, I need to buy me some of the CDs they've put out of music by the composers Jack and Stephen favored. ^_^

And oh my yes Mr. Firth. Nobody glowers like Colin Firth playing Mr. Darcy, and I say this as a fan of Russell "Champion Glowerer" Crowe.

Jane Austen is definitely fun. I've read P&P and Emma and several of her other works, and I still have copies of some of her works that I read in college. It was liking Jane Austen that helped make me love Patrick O'Brian's prose, too, which ties in with the whole M&C thing! And to bring it all around full circle, I was very amused that in Stephanie Barron's Jane Austen mystery series, she has a cameo appearance by Sophie Aubrey, since they're set in the same time frame.

At first, I was annoyed that it had to be a guy converting from Islam to Christianity that is causing all this hubbub. Why couldn't he have converted to Hinduism, or Buddhism, or something else? Then I stopped being annoyed and realized that it HAD to be Christianity... BushCo wouldn't have jumped onboard if it was anything but Christianity. So while I'm annoyed that this is going to be another Christian persecution case for the fundies to wave around, I am happy for that guy that he happened to pick the one religion that BushCo will go to bat for at all costs.

While I will admit to being doubtful whether Bush would have spoken up if this Afghan gent had jumped over to Hinduism or Judaism or Buddhism or (fill in your favorite flavor of paganism here) or especially if he'd turned out to be queer, that still doesn't change my fundamental stance on the matter. So here's hoping they can keep him from being executed.

You remind me a little of the Norwegian weekly that reprinted the Danish Mohammed cartoons. I wouldn't by any means defend the irate reactions they got, but I realized eveentually that it's a pretty fundamentalist Christian weekly with opinions that I can't in any way agree with.
