First and foremost, big congratulations go out to [livejournal.com profile] shadowhwk who announced yesterday that she is about to break into being published at last, as one of the startup authors for the shiny new Cobblestone Press. GO SARAH!

Next up, watched the Oscars yesterday evening, of course. And to indicate that I did in fact notice things about the whole shebang aside from the all-too-brief presence of Mr. Crowe, let me express my general pleasure that King Kong slurped up a couple of the technical awards and that Narnia won for Makeup (since I gotta admit, Mr. Tumnus did look really cool). I am sad that Cinderella Man didn't win anything, because it really did deserve something, but I am at least pleased on behalf of Aslan and the giant monkey. ^_^

In terms of the bigger awards, I'm less qualified to comment since I never actually saw any of the big contenders. The clips from Walk the Line did make me think that was pretty Oscar-worthy, just because even in those brief clips, I saw that Joaquin Phoenix was downright spooky channeling Johnny Cash. I am pleased that Rachel Weisz got Best Actress, just because I liked her in The Mummy, and she was starring opposite Ralph Fiennes. It does make me wonder if I ought to be looking at The Constant Gardener, anyway.

(Side note, I had another bizarro dream this morning, in which my subconscious apparently latched onto the aforementioned movie and tried to play it out in my sleeping brain. I'm pretty damned sure that the movie was not in fact about Ralph Fiennes murdering Rachel Weisz, her coming back as a vengeful green-and-white-haired, red-eyed demon and taking him out to avenge her own death, and his resurrection into the form of some tiny fey critter that my mind decided was called a 'biggle'. Where this all come from, you got me. I blame global warming.)

ANYWAY, I am vaguely bummed that Brokeback didn't snag Best Picture, and like several on my Friends list, I am bemused about the choice for Best Song, too. And I hear tell that Jon Stewart did not go over well as host, once again proving that Hollywood takes itself way too damned seriously. Me, I thought some of his jokes were kind of forced, but on the whole he was his beautifully snarky self. I especially liked the crack he made about montages, about how "it just got a little easier out there for a pimp", and okay, yeah, fine, I grinned at his dig at Russell, too. ;)

What else... [livejournal.com profile] solarbird, [livejournal.com profile] spazzkat, and I walked down to the local comic book store yesterday afternoon. I was not surprised to learn that they had no copies of the first ish of the current Elfquest series; this is what I get for being lame and not getting down there sooner. Oh well. If I wind up buying that storyline at all I suppose I'd rather have it in graphic novel form anyway.

And Saturday night, we watched Batman Begins courtesy of Netflix. Which would have been a lot more entertaining if the disc weren't so badly damaged that we had to take it out repeatedly and try to clean it, and finally play it in Paul's laptop. It was still fun to see the movie again, though, and at this point I think it's duking it out solidly with Batman Returns for my favorite Batman flick.

I went and saw the Oscar nominated animated shorts, and I'm still disappointed over that one. I knew it was going to be The Moon and the Son, but I really, really wanted 'The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello' to win. The Jasper Morello film has been (accurately) described as being like Tim Burton trying to write, direct and animate a film in the spirit of Jules Verne.

The website of the film has a trailer (http://www.jaspermorello.com/gazette/?page_id=25&currentSelection=7) for it. :)
