I've seen a lot of mentions on my Friends list this weekend of the passing of Octavia Butler. To those of you who were fans of her work, to those of you who respected and admired her as a fellow writer, my condolences to you. I have never read her work, but it's sounding like I really ought to. Would anyone have any recommendations on where to start?

Aside from the sad note on that front, the weekend's been pretty good. Friday: most excellent episode of Battlestar Galactica. Saturday: the waking up before 7am and being unable to get back to sleep part was annoying, but I used that time to finish off J.D. Robb's Origin in Death, which was a lot of fun. Later [livejournal.com profile] solarbird and I ran errands down to Lake Forest Park. Sunday: lots and lots and lots and lots of writing. Over 2,200 words. I'm very pleased with myself. ^_^

And to those of you who are local and interested in possibly attending resurrected Murkworks jams, don't forget to check out my polls on that topic here (especially this one, as it's about scheduling the first jam) and here (this one's about general jam-related questions).

I recently read Kindred, which was excellent. It's mostly a Slavery story, with modern folk somehow thrust back through time, but it's the best Slavery story I've read.

I really will cherish the signed and personalized copy I got last year.
