Another jamming poll!

Okay, I have a pretty strong impression off my last poll about jamming from the locals on my Friends list--there's a definite level of interest here. So far the trend is to Sunday afternoons, and most likely scheduled monthly as the majority of you have said that you could only attend sporadically. A nice assortment of instruments have been mentioned, and at least one person (hi technoshaman!) may just show up in an audience-hanging-out type capacity. Lots of willingness has been expressed in taking turns bringing pie, and two different people have offered to make pie. Mmmmmm homemade pie!

So we need a new poll. If you haven't answered the first one yet and you want to, it lives here. This poll is going to be about scheduling the first new jam.

Someday I will learn to play the guitar, and then somehow randomly show up at your place for a jam session one Sunday. :)

LOL! Well, that would certainly trump solarbird and me showing up in Kentucky for the Halloween party at our friend Archie's a few years back. stickmaker did a quadruple take when he saw us there. We'd never seen anyone do a quadruple take before. :D

It was great, there we were in the kitchen, not having told stickmaker we were going to be there. And Dara chirped, "Hi Rod!" His quadruple take was a thing of beauty. Hee hee hee.

I've also got an African drum, but I'm not sure it's an appropriate instrument given the genre...

Bring whatever instruments you feel like playing and don't worry about whether or not they are "genre appropriate". mamishka played djembe and doumbek all the type at previous Jams, because those are the drums she liked playing the best, though she also has a bodhran. :)

Besides, who says African drums can't be used to play Celtic music? Certainly this isn't stopping Afro Celt Sound System, or Heather Alexander. ;)

I didn't answer before, because I admit I didn' read closely enough to notice that just showing up as a spectator with pie would count. I wouldn't mind showing up as a spectator with pie! I don't have an instrument and I don't sing. But I can bring pie. I might even learn how to make some.

And yes, spectators/folks who would just like to hang out and listen to a lot of musicgeeking as well as actual playing of music are welcome. :)

Awesome! I don't know a lot of doumbek players. My troupe leader's son plays, so she sometimes will put him up on stage with his drum and do a live drum solo with him, which is pretty cool, but I never got to hear him just bust it out until our last dinner show - we had a bit of a scheduling crisis, and he had to just get out there and jam by himself for a few minutes. It was AMAZING! That boy can PLAY! I do enjoy a good doumbek. :)

I like the sounds of drums in general, but there's something really sort of... physical, almost, about African drums as well as bodhrans. :)

Hopefully Meems will be able to join us for some of these sessions, she was talking to me at one point about maybe trading off hosting between MurkSouth and MurkNorth, so we'll see what happens.

I suppose the other interesting question w.r.t. keyboards is, do you have one?

I vaguely recall seeing a piano at at least one of the Murkworksen (... which may be my memory playing tricks on me...) and various references to kathrynt and solarbird working stuff out at the keyboard (... unless that was at kathrynt's house...hm... )

(granted, I do have my Clavinova which is portable in some sense of the word, but still something of a pain to move around...)

We have two keyboards in fact, risu and spazzkat's. Though it behooves me to point out that we are most likely going to have tuning issues on multiple instruments, so if this twigs your ear too much, let us know, okay? :)

I'm guessing these are digital keyboards of some variety? Usually those are tunable.

In any case, I seem to be way more tolerant of tuning issues than people expect me to be, which I attribute to having grown up in a house with the piano tuned to A-400. (I'll skip the Bb Piano Gig story for now.)

On the other hand, for some reason, people expect me to be insane so maybe that's not saying a whole lot.

And I'll note that Q's piano does drive me a bit batty, so... I guess we'll see.

Both of the keyboards in the house are digital, yeah. Though I was more talking about other instruments; some of us in the past have had interesting adventures with tuning. :) We got pretty good at it after a while, but!

I'm among those who would have enjoyed checkboxes/a comment box, so I will note here:

Pretty much any week works for me provided I have a ride/my car. Either way, the first part of March I likely won't yet be comfortable driving in Seattle, so would need to ride up with Fred if anything. April I'll probably be fine driving up at any time.

I'll e-mail Fred now to see if we can work something out. :)
