Harrison Ford on the Daily Show
Feb. 8th, 2006 08:34 pmOkay, Harry's slowing down with age--you can really tell in how he spoke to Jon Stewart--but I have to admit he's still got a charming sense of humor. Jon remarked on how he did all of his stunts in Firewall, to which Ford deadpanned, "Well I had to, they gave me so much money. It would have been rude..."
I also giggled at how Jon asked him whether he had any computer savvy at all, and he said no. Jon asked him if he had a Blackberry, and Harrison said he had "a phone". Jon snickered and observed he also had a watch--analog, even. Harry said he was an analog kind of guy, and went on to observe that he thought that computers only served to create "another class of people to come to your house and fix broken shit". Jon liked that, too, and chimed in that computers were for "shopping online and looking at porn--not that I mean to imply that you shop online! You've got people for that!" Harry joked about having people to look at porn, too. ;)
Also very funny: Jon asking "when will people in movies ever learn to NOT fuck with Harrison Ford?" Hee! Harry's answer, again charmingly sheepish: "I'd be out of a job." Aww.
And when he was asked about when his new movie was opening (which is to say, SOON), he sheepishly finished up by saying he hoped "a few people would go". Aww. Just for that alone I may have to go look at this flick!

Date: 2006-02-09 07:12 am (UTC)I also heart analog watches. *is the only gal in school without a digital watch, it seems*

Date: 2006-02-09 07:17 am (UTC)And I note for general reference that my watch is also analog. ;)

Date: 2006-02-09 08:00 am (UTC)I've heard it's pretty much your standard mediocre thriller, but I've been surprised by movies like that before.

Date: 2006-02-09 06:27 pm (UTC)The trailer for Firewall honestly didn't grip me, but hey, I figure for old times' sake and for my deep and abiding affection for most of Harrison's movies, I may at least see this one as a matinee. ^_^

Date: 2006-02-09 02:21 pm (UTC)I have a watch that is digital AND analog. Ooh, lookit me.

Date: 2006-02-09 04:48 pm (UTC)Of course, a proper analog watch should be wound up every day, and is at best correct with a few seconds of accuracy after one day.

Date: 2006-02-09 06:56 pm (UTC)I've actually held onto this one for a while, too. I've changed its battery a couple of times, which is I suspect a bit weird in this day and age of "throw it away when it stops working".

Date: 2006-02-09 06:54 pm (UTC)And yeah, I always rather have liked Harrison's sense of humor. It's nice to be reminded of that, and to see he's still got it!

Date: 2006-02-09 04:43 pm (UTC)Anyway, I noticed that he'd grown a civil war style beard for a film which is in production right now. So did Pierce Brosnan, when he was on The Daily Show a short while ago. Both of them? Is it the same movie?
Checking IMDB, it doesn't look that way. Pity. I would have liked to see them together.
Now I wonder what he'll look like as Indiana Jones, 25 years after the first movie.
Funny. Some links in LiveJournal now seem to have been badly translated into Norwegian, while most of them still are in English.

Date: 2006-02-09 06:24 pm (UTC)Yeah, I noticed both his and Brosnan's beards (Brosnan was on the Daily Show not too long ago as well). It would be awfully neat to see them do something together, if nothing else for the giggle it would give to the fangirl in me. ;)
You set your language preferences on LJ to Norwegian, I take it?

Date: 2006-02-09 08:00 pm (UTC)"Harry"? I haven't heard that nickname for him before. In Norwegian, the name is slang for someone/something old, way out of date.
I don't see any particular language settings on my "Info" page. I have set that I live in Norway, but I think it's more likely that the language setting comes from my browser.
But God, looking at that "Info" page, someone has really done a hack job. Only about half of it has been translated, and it looks very much like a word for word substitution of the English text. I don't think it's been done by a translation engine, though.

Date: 2006-02-10 06:07 am (UTC)Ah, then you didn't go and set your language preferences on LJ, then? But you're seeing translated links? Weird!
*goes and reads the FAQ entry on viewing LJ in other languages* Ah, okay. It says there that LJ tries to default to your browser's language settings, so it would make sense then that it's trying to show you system stuff in Norwegian.
A shame that the translation is poor, though!

Date: 2006-02-12 06:55 pm (UTC)Naturally, people whose names really is "Harry," don't like it.
Other names with specific meanings include "Nils" and "Bjarne." Don't ask me.

Date: 2006-02-13 02:05 am (UTC)Y'know what's always confused me? How "Harry" could have been derived as a nickname from "Henry". I saw that in a mystery novel I read not too terribly long ago, a historical that was set in the age of Elizabeth I with young Elizabeth as the protagonist. One of the characters was named Henry, but nicknamed Harry. Since those two names are exactly the same number of syllables and characters, I don't much see the point of the nickname. :)
*snicker* I'll take your word for it on "Nils" and "Bjarne", then!

Date: 2006-02-12 07:01 pm (UTC)I have seen the Harrison Ford interview on The Daily Show now. Unfortunately, the video clip on the web site doesn't include the intro, which from the conversation that followed probably included a clip from the film they were talking about.
Curiously, once I'd seen it, I switched my TV to CNBC, where "The Late Show with Conan O'Brien" was on, who also had Harrison Ford as a guest! Highlight, despite a really threatening stare from Mr. Ford, he showed a clip from the Star Wars Christmas Special. I've never seen anything of it before. Clearly, good quality tapes of it still exist.
Oh dear, did I say "good quality" in connection with the Christmas Special? :-)

Date: 2006-02-13 02:08 am (UTC)*snorfle* I can only imagine the look on Harrison's face if Conan threw the Christmas Special at him. Poor guy. I'm not sure any of the Star Wars cast will ever live that down! :)
Making the rounds
Date: 2006-02-14 12:43 pm (UTC)Seems like the movie owes a little to "Ransom."
Re: Making the rounds
Date: 2006-02-14 05:48 pm (UTC)Ransom... I remember it vaguely but I don't think I ever saw it. So I can't compare.
Re: Making the rounds
Date: 2006-02-15 05:25 pm (UTC)It's also the title of a 1975 film with Sean Connery as the "Scandinavian Chief of Security Nils Tahlvik," with a huge fur hat. It would have been nice if they acknowledged that the entire film took place in Norway rather than using "Scandinavia" as if it was the name of the country. :-) But if I look past the patriotic thrill of seeing a star like Connery playing a Norwegian in a hijack drama, I must probably admit that it's a pretty forgettable film.

And snarky, too! Could it get any better? (Well, there's the whole 'Calista' angle, but we just won't think about that ;D)
Hmmm...my watch is analog, too. I hate digitals. Sad thing is, my 19-year-old sister-in-law can't read an analog clock. Blows my mind...

Date: 2006-02-09 06:58 pm (UTC)Wow, somebody who can't read an analog clock... that is rather mind-blowing. Even a bit more than someone who wouldn't know what to do with a vinyl LP, and I'm sure a lot of young people don't know that these days.
