What's Detroit like this time of year?
Jan. 22nd, 2006 06:56 pmDUDE. O.O I am experiencing a strange sensation. It feels like... interest in football.
I only just realized this afternoon how well the Seahawks had been doing. I mean, I'd been hearing about how well the Hawks had been doing over the last few weeks, and
spazzkat has been making jokes about wondering when the team had been replaced by alien replicants who could actually like, y'know, PLAY BALL, but I hadn't really clued in about how far along they'd gotten. And when I realized that whoever won the Seattle/Carolina game would be playing Pittsburgh at the Super Bowl, suddenly I went, "... whoa."
Normally
solarbird is the only football watcher here at MurkNorth, but today? We ALL watched the game. I was almost as amused by the crowd as I was by the sheer sight of the Hawks mopping the field with the Panthers--just all these thousands of people going absolutely batshit all throughout the game. And I'm sure that things are going to be equally batshit downtown all night!
Looks like we're going to have to watch the Super Bowl. I know exactly... what's the word? Oh yeah. NOTHING... about football. I am not a football fan. And for all I know Pittsburgh may eat the Seahawks for breakfast.
But I'll still cheer on our team for actually GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL! Awright! ^_^

Date: 2006-01-23 03:20 am (UTC)It's just a bizarro world universe where the Seahawks are actually good, much less good enough to go to the Super Bowl.

Date: 2006-01-23 03:26 am (UTC)But yeah! When did the portal to the bizarro world open up?

Date: 2006-01-23 03:39 am (UTC)Detroit has to be the worst city ever to get a Superbowl and the only reason they got one is payback for them building a nice shiny new stadium. Our city is beautiful and perfect for the Superbowl but we've been threatened that we won't get any more unless we build the Chargers a new stadium.

Date: 2006-01-23 04:13 am (UTC)It's awesome when your local team wins something -- Syracuse won the NCAAs three years ago and it was BEDLAM. And I loved every minute of it.

Date: 2006-01-24 03:22 am (UTC)I think this quote off an entry on the blog for a local alternative paper really kind of sums up how I react to the atmosphere around here right now:
"When I got to Rite Aid on Broadway, which I don’t like to go to because its employees are always surly, I confessed to the cashier that I was actually excited about Seattle going to the Super Bowl, that it made me happy that everyone was happy, that I wished we could invent more reasons for everyone in a city to be instantly, goofily happy, and she said she was happy about it too, and then she smiled, which was amazing, because historically this woman has had the personality of a garbage truck."
I.e., I'm not all that committed about the actual game, but I'm really kind of happy that the city is so happy. I like that a lot. :)

Date: 2006-01-23 05:59 pm (UTC)I live right downtown (corner of 4th and Bell) and people driving by honking and screaming was my first clue that we'd won. I happened to be at a news site at the time and when I clicked back to their home page it'd already changed to indicate the win.
I happened to be driving back through Portland, OR (where I was raised) back in '77 when the Sonics took the championship and the entire city was off the hook.
So, while I'll be rooting for the Hawks in two weeks I'll be doing it with the doors to the street firmly closed.
Of course, I won't be able to watch as we still don't own a TV.

Date: 2006-01-23 06:14 pm (UTC)I checked seattletimes.com the minute the game was over, and there in large type was the headline SUPER HAWKS. Hee.
I guess we'll have to buy beer and chips or something for the watching of the game. I understand that's traditional. ;)

Date: 2006-01-23 07:15 pm (UTC)Heh, a friend of mine said that her S.O. (who's a Steelers fan) was asking, if Seattle's gone this nuts for actually just going to the Super Bowl, what'll happen if the Hawks actually WIN? I figure Mount Rainier may erupt, the Alaska Way Viaduct will crumble, and Safeco Field will implode so we'll have to rebuild the Kingdome. ;)

Date: 2006-01-23 10:22 pm (UTC)I do know the feeling, from back when Norway beat Brazil in foot... soccer during the World Cup qualifications. I have hardly any interest in the sport, but then I suddenly had to follow our team.
I checked out my listings to see if any TV channel showed the Super Bowl. I didn't even know what sports channels I get -- that's how disinterested I am. But I just discovered that the game you're raving about starts up as a rerun right now!
And I'm off to bed, but I've started my VCR.
Happy birthday, by the way. I sent you something from Amazon on a whim. Having thought it through, it might not be to your taste, in which case you can do what you like with it, but I got the idea back when I visited you.

Date: 2006-01-24 07:01 pm (UTC)Maybe it is not meant to be watched alone.
By all means, I wish your team the best of luck at the Super Bowl, and I may even watch it -- taped like I do now -- but I wll probably forget the whole thing afterwards.
