I forgot to add that we also watched Big Fish last night, after War of the Worlds, and that was quite good and charming. There is no particularly deep conflict in it, just a young man trying to understand his father, who has a very colorful way with a tale. Ewan McGregor didn't have to stretch his acting legs very hard, but he was fun as the younger edition of the father character.

Plus, I was amused to realize tonight that two different people from the cast of Big Fish are also going to be in the next Russell Crowe movie, A Good Year: specifically, Albert Finney and Marion Cotillard. I mention this mostly because I am also deeply amused that Ms. Cotillard looks amazingly like the actress who played Fred on Angel, Amy Acker, at least in this pic. Every time I see it I think, "But, but, but, FRED!"

I liked all the tales of younger Edward, especially the bits where he was working at the circus and Danny DeVito's character kept giving him little snippets of information about his Destined Love. And how he'd keep murmuring dreamily to himself about her while cleaning up after elephants, or being shot out of a cannon... hee.

A nice reminder that why yes, actually, Mr. MacGregor is rather charming and cute!

I really liked "Big Fish" too - the way it dealt with what's true vs. what's REAL. And, yeah, the adorable Ewan.

I liked how they started slipping in little links between what was true and what was real towards the end, too, and not in any really awkward way. Just one or two pertinent facts, and Will's mother saying dryly, "Not everything your father says is a complete fabrication." Heh!

This makes, not counting the new Star Wars movies, the third thing I've seen Ewan in--the other two being pieces of Velvet Goldmine and Moulin Rouge.

I'd thought about seeing The Island or Stay, the things I've seen recent trailers for that he was in, but Dara says the former of those wasn't any good. I haven't heard about the latter.
