In which we have an off-week, and in which Paul has a brand new (well, okay, brand new OLD) electric guitar, and in which we branch out and play with some new stuff, including something that isn't folk. Songs: "You Woke Up My Neighborhood", "Stray Cat Strut", "Jack Hinks".

This was another of those times when we had a very small session -- and almost thought we weren't going to play at all, until [livejournal.com profile] daspatrick (Patrick) showed up. Fred is on duty again and will be for a while; [livejournal.com profile] kathrynt (Kathryn) had familial obligations, and [livejournal.com profile] mamishka (Mimi) work ones; Monica, unfortunately, has tendonitis.

But on the happy side, [livejournal.com profile] spazzkat (Paul) has a new electric guitar. Or, rather, an old electric guitar, which was given him by a friend of ours for free. We knew it was an old guitar and not in very good shape, but didn't realize that it was actually a good guitar until [livejournal.com profile] solarbird (Dara), Paul, and [livejournal.com profile] ssha (Cyn) worked on it and it turned out to clean up quite nicely. It's a Hofner, dating from the mid-sixties and this particular guitar was apparently made in Germany. Paul has dubbed it 'the Colonel'.

After spending almost of all of the session playing said guitar on Paul's new amp, Patrick fell in love with the Colonel and informed Paul morosely that his free guitar was going to cost him a lot of money, because now he wants one like it.

Because there were so few of us, though, we had a very laid-back sort of session.

First off we took a stab or three at "You Woke Up My Neighborhood" -- first with me on the mandolin joining the guitars (Patrick on the electric, Paul on his acoustic), and then with me joining Cyn on singing to help keep the rhythm. It all wasn't too terribly bad, though we had some issues with everyone being together. The guitars were in sync with one another, and the vocalists were in sync with one another, but we had some problems syncing up the guitars with the vocalists.

Second off, just because Paul mentioned he'd been trying to learn how to play "Stray Cat Strut", we tried that. Yeah, it's a total departure from what we usually play, but well hey, it seemed like the thing to do at the time. ;) So Cyn broke out her bass to play along with Patrick -- and Paul took over singing, and that worked rather well for the style of the song. I opted out of the mandolin since I didn't know many of the chords, and this left Dara and me to try to figure out what to do on our flutes. Since it didn't feel like a piccolo song I broke out my silver, and Dar picked up his biggest bamboo, and we tried to figure out what the heck we were doing.

How'd we do? Enh well, let's just say it needed some work. But it was a fun switch from what we usually do, playing with this song.

Lastly, back to Great Big Sea -- but this time with a ditty we hadn't ever tried before, "Jack Hinks". I like this one; it's one of the ones in a key I can usually comfortably sing. Also, it doesn't give me fits of breath control like "Old Black Rum" does.

We could find only one set of tabs for this on the web, and they were also capo'd, but that was fine with Paul as that meant he could play most of the chords easily. Patrick took up his acoustic again and played sans capo; both of 'em, however, had a bit of an issue with the odd timing on this ditty under the halfway point on each of the verses. E.g., "Poor Jack in his life / was ne'er paired with a wife." For additional challenge, we determined that the snippet of instrumentals Cyn had to go with this song seemed to be in the wrong key, so we didn't do much with the bridge. Overall this ditty, too, needed some work.

At last we called it pie time. The pie this time: peach, which we'd never had before. Went nicely warmed up under vanilla ice cream, too.
