In which most of us are back again, and we get another printable take of "Mari-Mac"; Mimi sings in French, Kathryn plays harp chords, and I play mandolin chords, and Kathryn sings while holding her jaw! Songs: "Trois Navires de Ble", "Mari-Mac", "Jolly Butcher", "You Woke Up My Neighborhood".

We had another one of those sessions today in which a number of us were late in arriving -- but at least once everyone FINALLY arrived that was going to play, we had six of us. Which was a nice change of pace after a couple of sessions with five and even just four on hand to play!

While we were waiting for Monica to arrive, we played around with a GBS ditty we hadn't tried to tackle before: "Trois Navires de Ble". [livejournal.com profile] kathrynt (Kathryn) had exulted at us before about teaching herself some of the chords for this song on her harp, a great success for her considering that she is still very new to this whole concept of playing an instrument. So while she plunked out the various chords, I printed off the instrumental bits from Deb's UK website, and [livejournal.com profile] mamishka (Mimi) and I played around with listening to the lyrics on Turn.

By the time we got to a point of being vaguely ready to start playing it, though, Monica finally showed up. And much to everyone's satisfaction, she did in fact have TABS for this song (courtesy of the GBS Boston site -- THANKS FRAN!), which to my personal satisfaction led me to realize that... (drumroll)...

I know EVERY SINGLE CHORD IN THIS SONG on the mandolin!

So although I had been thinking of singing it along with Mimi, I punted to the mandolin instead and let Monica sing with her as we played. Some of the trickier chord transitions are still beyond me, but it is immensely gratifying to know that the chords I've been learning can be applied here! There's a good six chords to know, too: G, A minor, C, D, E minor, and B minor.

We did decently enough on this for a song we hadn't tried before, but suffice to say we need some more work on it. ;) Meems had a bit of an issue with figuring out where all the French syllables go into the rhythm of the song -- since the lovely and talented Mr. Doyle sort of slurs things together in places, and also because she just doesn't know the song yet.

Next up, just because we wanted to be able to keep the song in our mind, and because we had enough of us to do a credible take -- "Mari Mac". A bit of shakiness here and there with the tempo, and on some of the takes I had some issues with my piccolo parts, though it was nice to hear from Kathryn that I was in fact screwing up in plausible fashions. This, you see, is a valuable musician skill! The good things about our various takes, too, was that our increases in tempo were all very smooth. And I must say furthermore that Kathryn is amazed that we did our best take while holding the side of her jaw in place, because she has bad TMJ and her jaw started acting very weirdly while we were working on it!

After that, another round of, as Monica likes to put it, "butchering the Butcher". We had a few tempo issues with this, though, since we had one take that was too slow and one that was too fast. No printable take of "Jolly Butcher" from this session, unfortunately.

Last but not least, another round of "You Woke Up My Neighborhood", since [livejournal.com profile] solarbird (Dara) wanted another crack at a song for which she'd actually written herself a part. This is also the first time Mimi was here for a take of this song, and the immediate happy result of this was that we determined that Meems had a much solider grasp of the rhythm of the lyrics than Kathryn's been able to achieve so far. I sat out for this song since although I want to play the mandolin on it, I've been playing a lot of mandolin lately and my fingers were starting to hurt by this point.

This week's pie was special indeed, because it was HOMEMADE. Dara made an apple pie from the pile of apples shed by our tree out in the yard, and there are few finer things on earth than warm apple pie with vanilla ice cream on top, we're all here to tell ya!

And last, but not least, without further ado our current take of "Mari Mac":
