Samples for the new GBS album!
Oct. 3rd, 2005 07:29 pmFor any GBS fans on my Friends list who aren't actually over on
greatbigsea yet, as I posted there earlier today, the full set of samples for the new album are now posted up on its official page on greatbigsea.com now. No lyrics yet, but if the B'ys hold true to form, I suspect we won't be actually getting lyrics posted--specifically because they've avoided posting lyrics of the trad ditties in the past to make all of us fan types learn 'em the way THEY did, by listening to 'em over and over and over and over and over... ;)
Listening to all these samples, the overall feel I get goes clear back to the very first GBS album, the self-titled debut. Which is, after all, the entire point of this album: GBS returning to its musical roots, the traditional music of Newfoundland. The style of the instrumentals, allowing for differences in mixing with equipment, feels a lot like that first album. Séan's vocal delivery hearkens back to those days, from what I'm hearing, and so does Alan's in a way. The only thing we're really missing is Darrell. Sniffle. But we do get Bob singing lead on track 1!
"Come And I Will Sing You" - Whoa, it's odd hearing Bob's vocals so clear and clean! I totally did not recognize him until one of the posters on the Fishtank ID'd him. I thought he was Murray, maybe! This is what I get for having Bob's last vocals in my head being very rough and raw from the live Sympatico webcast. Very complex-sounding rhythm on those lyrics, though. This ought to be quite a workout for Bob's vocals.
"Old Polina" - This sounds like a lot of fun! Lively bodhran and Séan in high fine shanty mode.
"The River Driver" - Oh MY, I'm starting to get an idea of why the folks who have heard this one live are so blown away. Beautiful vocals out of Alan, and the harmony on the chorus is stunning!
"The Mermaid" - BWAHAHAHAHA! This sounds like classic bawdy Séan material. "But I only liked the upper part, I did not like the tail!" This, clearly, is the song to go with the cover art. >:)
"Graceful & Charming" - And in a hard turnaround, now we get Séan in ballad mode. He's giving it a treatment that actually makes it sound like a non-trad ballad, not unlike the stuff he sang on Something Beautiful*, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
"Concerning Charlie Horse" - HAH, this sounds fun! And now Alan gets to deal with the tongue-twisting lyrics, too, and we get a full-throated harmony chorus! This'll be great fun in concert.
"Harbor LeCou" - More of Séan in slow trad ballad mode. Don't know if I'll like this one yet.
"Tshialuk Girls Set" - The obligatory instrumental! Sounds GOOD! Though I wonder about the spelling, the actual sound file has Tshialuk, but the link on the page has Tishialuk.
"French Shore" - Alan in slow trad ballad mode this time. I think I like Alan's voice better for these sorts of songs--and ah, we have the harmony there, which always makes me like these sorts of songs better.
"Cod Liver Oil" - HAH, now I just have to wonder where this song is going. The lyrics certainly have me wanting to hear more. This ought to be fun in concert too.
"Tickle Cove Pond" - Oh my, I like this chorus. And with the title of the album showing up in the lyrics we're hearing here, it'll be easy to expect this one to really be a fine closer for the album in general.
Yes, folks, I can do this much fangirl swooning over samples. Just wait till the actual album comes out--you ain't read nothin' yet. And we won't even talk about the explosion of swooning you're going to get out of me when they go back on TOUR.
In conclusion, as if y'all didn't already know this: GIMME!

Date: 2005-10-04 03:10 am (UTC)(Not that it takes much to connect GBS and the Muppets in my brain, ever since I read that one fan's rendition of how a GBS appearance on the Muppet Show would go. I STILL want to see Alan swooned over by a gaggle of Gonzo's chickens, Miss Piggy chasing Séan through the theater, and the Muppet treatment of the wake for Paddy Murphy!)

Date: 2005-10-04 03:16 am (UTC)It was a very odd combination, though not as odd as Mr. Paliotti, my Moral Ed. teacher who looked like Jiminy Cricket. (And failed me three times. Yep - I failed Moral Ed.)

Date: 2005-10-04 02:46 am (UTC)The whole CD rocks. I found myself skipping over almost all of Sean's songs on Something Beautiful but I like him on this one.

Date: 2005-10-04 03:01 am (UTC)And cool, glad to know there's a vocal bit in there! Those little vocal bits are some of the biggest things I love about GBS instrumentals.
Yeah, the only one of Séan's on Something Beautiful* I regularly play is "John Barbour". Because, well, magnificent and stuff. I don't care for the rest of his tracks. But the way his delivery has developed these days, it sounds like it fits a lot better with this material!

Date: 2005-10-04 03:39 am (UTC)It was cool to hear the three guys play some of the tunes live on Saturday. I think it might be one of the first times they've played as a trio. We got to hear The Old Polina, Tickle Cove Pond, The Mermaid, Captain Kidd, The River Driver, Sweet Forget Me Not, Come and I Will Sing You, Jack Hinks and Ordinary Day. Then they put the CD on the stereo, hit repeat and mingled. Wicked night.

Date: 2005-10-04 04:18 pm (UTC)Alan Doyle, one of the few men on this planet who can knock me over at fifty paces just by the recorded sound of his voice! Just the thought of hearing him do exactly that with ALL of "The River Driver"... man oh man oh man oh man. :D
