Jam Report #1: 1/20/01
Jan. 20th, 2001 08:48 pmFirst of a series of writeups of Three Good Measures jam sessions, as originally posted to the Great Big Sea message board, the Online Kitchen Party. Archived to Livejournal on 10/1/05.
In which we attempt for the first time to actually do something musical. Songs: "Greensleeves", "Skye Boat Song", and "Consequence Free".
If there is anything that fails to suck more than having a herd of people show up at your house to play music, it's having them show up and all sound PRETTY DARNED GOOD!
The place: the Murkworks, who if we aren't the coolest household in Seattle, are at least a good strong contender.
The people: Myself, U.S. Navy Sailor, and Old Brown's Daughter, representing the OKP; my partner; one of our tenants, another raging GBS fan; and two more musically inclined friends. One of whom,
kathrynt (Kathryn), is yet another raging GBS fan and who was responsible for helping me organize this little shindig.
The instruments: Flute (both silver with keys and bamboo without) and piccolo, two guitars and a dulcimer.
The voices: The lovely and talented Kathryn (who is, I might add, operatically trained and has quite the set of pipes on her) and
ssha (Cyn) making some pretty harmony.
The songs: "Greensleeves", both in A minor and G; "The Skye Boat Song"; and, in a total change of the expected program, "Consequence Free", which worked astonishingly well even though we wound up playing it a half step down from how the B'ys sing it on Turn. (As alpha instrumental geek in the group, I was fairly sure we were playing in G, while the B'ys were in A, but well hey, we were all pretty fond of G after playing two previous songs in it. ;) )
The pie: Dutch apple, which although it was storebought was still QUITE tasty with Breyer's vanilla ice cream on top. Along with the pie, we ALSO had cake and ice cream.
The verdict: We're going to do this again next week, and next week, we're gonna do "Jolly Butcher". We will let you fine folks know if we get something we like well enough to actually put onto tape and share with you all. ;)
(And I'm NOT going to make jokes about being a pied piper. Honest.)
Kudos to Old Brown's Daughter being alpha guitar on "Consequence Free", and for the providing of the chocolate cake; kudos too to Latte Fred, who in addition to bringing cookies also brought his dulcimer and sang us the Godzilla lyrics to "Trois Navires de Ble".
All in all, though, it was a whole lot of fun, and I'm greatly looking forward to next week!
