Just watched the BSG summer finale, and I would now like to take this opportunity to say:

*draws in deep breath*

ARGH! BASTARDS! SON OF A FRAKKING BITCH! ARGH! ARGH! ARGH! ARGH!

HOW long until January?!

Let's just say that mamishka's comment earlier this season about how one does not so much "enjoy" BSG as SURVIVE it is extremely applicable to this episode!

Thank you for your comments! I'm starting to think maybe I was overreacting on it, but I appreciate the clarity with regards to the original show, which I've never seen.

Me, I'm old enough that I caught the show when it first came out and on its initial wave of reruns through the 80's... so it's a pretty hefty part of my childhood. :)

And it'll be interesting to see if the new one follows a similar pattern to the old; in the original, the Pegasus actually wasn't around for very long.

I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't around for long. I suppose it's my Trek experiences that tell me this -- every time Voyager met up with something Federation-esque it never survived very long.

yeah (although in my case it's my "Lost In Space" experiences, but then Voyager was pretty much the same idea).

The interesting question will be who actually destroys them; something tells me it's not going to be the Cylons this time around.

Now that Dara has reminded me of what actually happened to the Pegasus the first time around, I do indeed find myself wondering what the ship's fate will be this time. Muahaha!

God, so much lovely stuff on which to speculate here. We've been having a lot of fun with it at the Murk. I think my favorite question of the moment is where the hell they got their Six.

am I remembering correctly that it was just some run-of-the-mill Cylon battle where they basically took one for the team, blew up, and that was that?

(that was what annoyed me most about the old series; they had this great premise and then they never really did anything with it. 40 minutes into every episode the Cylons would attack, almost like clockwork and oh-my-god-who-will-win-the-suspense-is-killing-me)

Not quite correctly, no. I had thought they exploded too, but Dara says that the Pegasus actually disappeared in the middle of a huge battle with multiple base stars (three, we think). The way she remembers it, it did actually successfully take out one, and it was going after another with nukes, so it had to send away the vipers it had launched because they didn't have adequate shielding against nuke strikes. Which is why the vipers wound up having to join Galactica's crew later.

So the Pegasus was thought destroyed, but nobody was ever really SURE...

It'll be interesting to see... BSG may surprise us in this regard, and I wouldn't put it past it to do so. However, there are bunches of interesting practical considerations as well, that would make me wonder exactly how long they can get away with keeping the Pegasus around as a feasible plot device.

E.g., I'm thinking Admiral Cain is not going to take well to Roslin's Presidential authority and will probably not be inclined to share power. In fact, I would not be surprised at all if she winds up declaring much more effective martial law than Tigh did. Which in turn leads me to wonder if the Fleet would realize that Cain's way scarier than Adama and the Galactica ever were, and then call upon the Galactica to tell the Pegasus to fuck off...

So, SO much to wonder about here. Aigh! :) It's probably a good thing I'm going to be nicely distracted by Lost and Charlie Jade during the hiatus!

It's something mamishka and I got introduced to when we went to CascadiaCon (a.k.a. this year's NASFiC) over Labor Day weekend. It's a very Blade-Runner-esque, SF-noir-ish TV series that recently just had its first season air in Canada, and it filmed in, of all places, South Africa. So it has a look to it that I haven't ever seen on TV before.

They showed the pilot episode and the one immediately following at the con, and it was good. The show's producer as well as the guy who plays the lead character, Charlie, were at the con and were very personable, so between that and the quality of the episodes they showed, Meems and I eagerly sicced solarbird onto Bittorrent to try to find all the episodes. (Right now that's the only way U.S. audiences can get it, though the show's producers are trying to convince the Sci-Fi channel to pick it up.)

It's got an official site, but last I looked it was rife with spoilers, so you might visit that only at your discretion. :)

I've only watched a few episodes so far(the local cable didn't offer the Sciffy Channel, so I got a dish-cheaper,better picture, more channels)..BSG is addictive..
Adama has the same model Timex I do-I think-it looks a lot like it(Expedition)..now that company must have awesome distribution..seriously, though,the recognizable items sort of adds a bit of..additional "believability" to it. The Galactica's intercom/phones are German military surplus field phones, and they've used Maglites...
Watching BSG is almost like watching live war coverage...Scott

Yes, that "live", "right-there" feeling is a big part of the show's style. I love it. I love it so.
