MoveOn is taking out an ad in President Bush's local newspaper in support of Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a soldier killed in Iraq who is camped outside Bush's ranch in Texas asking for a meeting with the president. They'll publish the number of signers and the best comments in a full two-page spread in the newspaper nearest to Crawford (The Waco Tribune Herald) while Cindy holds her vigil. Can you sign and spread the word before the 3:00 PM Friday print deadline?

I thought that this was a very simple, very nice thing to do. I read the articles about Ms. Sheehan and am feeling for this woman, having the bravery to go and ask Bush to answer her that one simple question. So I signed the petition, and thought I'd pass it along to y'all. Thanks for taking the time, if you choose to sign the petition as well.

I've heard a lot about this on Air America radio, but there's been nothing that I've seen on the TV network news.

I hope she stands her ground and gets plenty of support.

Yeah. Reading what others have shared with me on this post about this, I see that this is not actually the first time she's tried to talk to the President, and I'm getting the impression that the first time around wasn't exactly satisfying. I hope this time it goes better. I'm seeing references to her getting accused of changing her tune for political purposes--but regardless of her motives, I think that if she wants to have a face to face, rational, earnest conversation with Bush, she ought to be given a chance. Here's hoping!

Today the Republican-slanted Drudgereport had the big headline about how her family is begging her to give it up. On Air America there's reports of busloads of people showing up to support her. Still haven't seen anything on the nightly news, but I don't watch much of it, really.

I don't follow the nightly news much either--if nothing else because our local news broadcasts rather suck. These days I tend to get my news either from NPR or from online (news.bbc.co.uk, cnn.com, and our local newspaper's site).

I've continued to keep an eye on the story... I noticed that she had to leave for a bit because of a family emergency, but that she's come back.

I appears that she has already met with Bush. Sheehan's meeting with Bush in June 2004 (http://michellemalkin.com/archives/003204.htm)

I had not seen that, no.

However, chatting about it with Dara to see what she knows about the background of this, I also am not certain of the neutrality of that particular side of the story. Dara says that it's her understanding that the Drudge Report edited the details of the 2004 meeting somewhat, and that Sheehan's apparent change of heart is not quite so dramatic as might now be thought. When I get a chance, I'll Google around and see if I can find some other takes on it to try to get a properly rounded picture.

Thanks for the data, anyway. I don't think it ultimately changes my opinion. Regardless of whether she's had a change of heart from a prior stance, if she wants to have an earnest, up front conversation with the President, I think she ought to be given the chance.
