Kerfluffle for dessert, anyone?

I have learned a new word today--or, at least, I should say that I learned that a word I thought I knew was in fact misspelled in my brain. The word in question is 'kerfuffle'; I have been mistakenly thinking it was 'kerfluffle' all this time. Nevertheless, I am convinced that 'kerfluffle' ought to be a word in its own right, perhaps a dessert. "Mmmmm peach kerfluffle," said spazzkat, local LJer, upon this issue.

What brings this word to mind, for those of you who are not versed on gossip coming out of the publishing industry, is the huge kerfuffle (note my careful lack of extra L there) coming out of the awards ceremony debacle at the recent Romance Writers of America conference. This is being talked about all over the place on various and sundry blogs; the first link I saw about it, though, sums up the situation best. technosage was there, and has her own commentary on the matter. Me, I'm with alg, who while actually present at the conference, reported that she did not actually attend the awards and that it's a good thing she didn't, because she'd have had to storm out.

Meanwhile, a little visit to my chiropractor has shaken some ick loose out of my neck, which has done wonders for my ability to sleep. However, I don't think she got it all; I will likely have to go see her again soon just to get rid of the rest of the crunchy in my neck. Whether I do this before or after my surgery remains to be seen. Also, I still need more sleep, since I have had a few nights lately when I've been up till nearly midnight trying to write. So I've been running short on the slumber all week--and neither does it help matters much when I wake up in the middle of the night, poised between consciousness and dreaming, finding myself gazing blurrily up at the ceiling while a fragment of dream is still playing out in my brain and making me convinced I'm actually in a house that's tumbling ass over teakettle down a hillside.

Thanks to the lovely mamishka and lyricae, I now have a copy of the Mal-cover Serenity #1; yay! Naturally I plowed through it last night. Picoreview: nice art, all the cast members in proper character form, and it felt overall like 10 or 15 minutes of an actual Firefly episode. It was therefore entirely too short. I am now anxious to see Serenity #2. Two copies of the Kaylee-cover issue, Meems reports, are now in her hands. Meems also reports word of impending Firefly novels, which makes me perk up and go 'oooooh'. I hope that they will be good ones, for lo, I may actually have to buy one or two of those.

Speaking of media tie-in novels, I re-read another one of my X-Files tie-in novels last night: Antibodies, by Kevin J. Anderson. Not too bad, though his prose was not as good as Ben Mezrich's Skin, and neither was his characterization. There was one instance in the first couple of pages where a sentence fragment leapt right out at me, a fragment that wasn't being used in any sort of effective way; it was just there. Because I am feeling nostalgic, I think I will re-read the rest of the novels anyway. I do miss me some X-Files, at least from the earlier seasons before it started to suck.

I am informed that I should be receiving a phone call from Swedish on the 19th as to when exactly my surgery is going to be scheduled for the 23rd. Goody.

Definitely doesn't make sense to alienate the whole damned room while the winners have to take a backseat to all the Drama. Good gravy!

I have absolutely no connection to the RWA, of course, but since it's writing-industry-related I've been just slurping up all the blog posts out of general amazement. I feel like I ought to have a big bag of popcorn.

Me too! Though I have seen folks posting about wishing they had been there just to do the MST3K on the whole thing, and/or get through it with liberal quantities of gin, I'm not sure either of these would have helped!

The Serenity novel's being written by kradical, whose stuff is *very* good....

And Issue #2 is fantastic!

I never really cared much for the show, but some of the novelizations are good..I've read Antibodies(dealing with nanotech,IIRC)..this novellization was recycled from a short story of his-I've forgotten the title,but the were*very*similar.
Kevin J. Anderson(and his wife,too..I*think*at least some of his novels are a team effort)also wrote an X-files novel called Ground Zero..about..fusion ghosts and the test of an experimental(alien tech?)fallout-free nuclear bomb..
I hope the surgery goes well for you.I have to go in early tomorrow(Saturday)morning for an MRI(hospitals creep me out,despite the fact I worked in one for three years). Scott

Yeah, I have Ground Zero, too; there were six novelizations as far as I know, and I have them all. Anderson was somewhat better an author than Grant, the guy who did the first two, at least if nothing else because he actually referred to the characters as "Mulder" and "Scully" rather than "Fox" and "Dana". Grant did that, and it was rather distracting. :)
