One to beam up
Jul. 20th, 2005 10:28 amEvery geek on my Friends list probably knows about this already, but for those of you who don't, James Doohan has passed away. Of especial interest to Washington-based geeks, he was local; he died in his home in Redmond.
Sniffle. I feel like I ought to go home and watch something Star Trek in his honor, and raise a glass of something green.
Tell me your favorite Scotty quotes, folks! Mine isn't just one line--it's the entire conversation he has with Kirk in "The Trouble With Tribbles" about why he started the fight with the Klingons. "He called the Enterprise a garbage scow!"

Date: 2005-07-20 05:40 pm (UTC)Although close behind it is his retort to
Majelthe holodeck computer when it asked him which Enterprise he wanted a sim of... "N-C-C-1-7-0-1. No bloody A, B, C, or D!"no subject

Date: 2005-07-22 07:23 pm (UTC)Where's that quote from? Isn't "D" the "Next Generation" Enterprise?

Date: 2005-07-22 08:05 pm (UTC)And yeah, the D is the Next Gen ship. A is the ship that Kirk gets to command after the 4th movie. The B shows up as of "Generations"--which is movie #7, I believe. (I just looked all this up on startrek.com, does it show? ;) ) The C is in the Next Gen episode "Yesterday's Enterprise".

The Engineer's Hymn (by Leslie Fish)
Oh Lord, thou hast made this world
the shadow of a dream
and taught by time I treat it so
except for the ion stream
from buckler flange to spindle guide
I see the hand o' God.
Predestination in the stride of yon connecting rod
I know thy seas are very very wide
and the ship, in truth, is small.
And those who dwell within her hide
I care for one and all
Their safety rests upon my skills
Their lives are in my hands
I take it for a sacred trust
though they rarely understand.
The captain rules upon the bridge,
but I reign here below
He sends his orders down the line,
and I'm pleased to have it so.
For though his word's the iron law
as ancient rule decrees,
I know what truly moves this ship,
are my engines, Lord, and me.
Behold these trembling engine sparks
that keep this ship alive
I know them down to their atom's parts
that I and mine might thrive.
And fools they be, who fail to see,
why I hold my engines dear
For the engine room is a temple raised
to the Gods of the engineer.
*Raises a finger or two of single malt to a fine actor, a talented writer, and a character who will never leave our hearts.*

Date: 2005-07-20 10:03 pm (UTC)My favorite Scotty quote: Would ye like a wee nip of Scotch Whiskry?
I can't remember the name of the episode it came from, but I do remember it was one where the Klingons or some faction captured the Enterprise and they were luring the different enemies one by one out to put in the brig. He managed to convince one to try a sip from his private stash of whiskey.
Another favorite, and it is a common one for Star Trek: You canna change the laws of physiscs.

I love the way he says, "Keyboard. How quaint."
"Damage control is easy. Reading Klingon, that's hard."
All of the above are from Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
