This is exactly how my next thyroid surgery should go. Because if they're going to go in for a second battle with my mutant space thyroid, I should damn well get superpowers.

Anna sulks as more thyroid surgery also means she'll have to spend some weeks

I take it Alan Doyle is GBS' lead singer?

Indeed... I really like what the surgery has done to my own voice; it's changed it from a squeaky tenor to a very nice basso profundo... of course, a lot of that probably has to do with the fact that there's not this MASS squashing my windpipe all out of proportion (wait'll I get the CT scan up on the web, it doesn't *look* gory but if you think about it too hard it'll give you the willies for sure...)

My last surgery did actually seem to do something beneficial to my voice--I noticed that, too. Once I recovered from the strain on the throat muscles and vocal cords, it seemed as though my voice got a little clearer and deeper, and my breath control improved. That was a happy side effect of having to go through the surgery in the first place, to be sure.

We don't have a "when" yet--the only thing I have scheduled as of right now is a consulation on the 20th with the surgeon, Dr. Stickney, who did the procedure last year. It'll be all about making sure she's up to date, and re-briefing me on how things should go, and all that. Probably at that point will be when a surgery is actually scheduled. Since I had a similarly-timed consulation last year, I would expect that my surgery will wind up being some time in early August.

And yes, Alan Doyle is GBS's lead singer, and the one over whom I swoon the hardest. :) (Though he is more properly the primary lead singer, as Sean McCann also sings lead on about a third of the songs, and from a purely technical musical standpoint he actually has a better voice.)

Yay! Do please keep in touch and feel free to drop comments on my journal at any time. I may have officially quit TM (and am planning to see what I can do about adapting some of my characters into my own universes so I can still tell their stories), but I'd love to keep in touch with other TM folks.

Especially ones that love GBS too. :)

I think it's just great that -- considering what you're going through -- you still have a sense of humor, but that is so important! Hey...nothing wrong with superpowers! I keep hoping my use of fingerprint powders and chemicals will give me some considering how long I've been using them!

That is odd that your therapy, etc. has adjusted your singing voice, but at least it's been on the positive side!

Well, there was no therapy involved with the thyroid surgery last year--just some weeks of my throat having to heal up. It took about a week and a half for me to start feeling normal enough after the surgery to resume my daily activities.

But it took longer for my voice to really recover. That took some extra weeks. During that time my throat would get tired if I talked for too long--or if I tried to sing outside about an octave or so in the very middle of my range. It was very vexing, too, because it meant that I couldn't properly belt out several of my very favorite Great Big Sea songs. :)

And yeah, since then I've noticed that my voice does actually sound a little stronger and clearer. I'm pretty sure it's because of the same thing that technoshaman mentioned--i.e., that the nodes created by my thyroid, at least on the right side, were no longer pressing against my windpipe. It'll be interesting to see whether the same thing happens when they take out the rest of it.

Oh wow! I'd never thought of that way -- about the nodes pressing against your windpipe. That could make an enormous difference.
