I think Carbon Leaf may well have secured a place now as my official third favorite band. I just was moved to go find the tabs for "Raise the Roof", to see if I could figure out how to play it. From this I have learned that "Raise the Roof" is in the key of D--no wonder I can sing it. ;) (Mostly. I can't quite manage to hit that lowest note when the verse goes down to "I need proof". Foo. I have to take it up a couple of keys to actually be able to hit all the notes.)

Simple chord writeup, though. All D, G, and A. I'm not convinced that that's all that's in there, though--my ear kept wanting to put in some Asus4 and Dsus4 as transition chords. I need to listen a little harder and figure out if those chords are actually in there.

It sounds like it'll be a pretty easy song for me to try to figure out how to sing while I'm playing, though. Whoot!

Hrmm. I'm not sure that "who do they remind you of?" is really a good question with me, since I tend to have weird and oddly specific musical tastes. I don't listen to the radio, so if I get hooked on a new group or artist, it tends to be because I've either had them recommended to me or have deliberately gone out to find someone new in a genre of music I like (e.g., Celtic).

So I could compare them against other groups or artists I listen to, but I'm not sure how much that would make sense to you since I'm not sure how many of them you'd also know. :) Of all the groups I listen to, though, I'd say they're closest in flavor to the Paperboys and Captain Tractor--the Paperboys lyrically, due to their having nifty, complex, and emotional lyrics, and Captain Tractor in terms of the sort of folk rock flavor of their instrumentation.

Anyway, if the album you've been sent is Indian Summer, I do definitely recommend it. My repeat listen tracks off that album: "Life Less Ordinary", "What About Everything?", "Grey Sky Eyes", "Raise the Roof", "Paloma", "One Prairie Outpost", and "Let Your Troubles Roll By".

That "Who do they remind you of?" question is a killer. Every time I try to put Snake Suspenderz music up on one of those music sites they ask "Who do you sound like?".

Ummmm... we sound like every other soprano ukulele and bass trombone act you've ever heard? Yeah, right.

I know it's supposed to help folk who're more likely to dig us to locate and check us out but it's nearly impossible to even guess.

Worse yet, anyone we remotely resemble is going to be so damn obscure that only a very teensy subset of people are going to be searching for them.

*sigh* I coulda been a dentist but nooooooo! I had to choose "weird ass musician".

Stupid artistic impulses! ;) I'll at least have it SLIGHTLY better as a writer, since I'll be able to still point at certain fantasy writers and say, "I try to write like them!"

As for my own musicality, I don't play often enough to sound like anybody except whoever's songs I'm trying to play at the time! (Though what with playing with Meg Davis' "Elf Glade" this afternoon, I seem to have something new getting into my guitar rhythm line, and damned if I know what it is. Little extra twiddles on the strums. Going to have to see if this keeps up. Whoot!

Also, after playing off and on for several hours today when I should damn well be writing, my hand hurts. I think my muse is trying to tell me something. ;) )

I'm in love with Let your troubles roll by right now. Very simple too, just two chords D and A the whole time, but I have my problems to keep the rhythm when he starts with He knows he can help himself.... Not the playing but the singing part...I hope a little more practice will do :)

There is a certain lovely simplicity to that song, yeah. And the rhythm in the delivery of Carbon Leaf's lyrics, on several songs, is one of the many things I love about them. It makes them intriguing to listen to. :)
